Wondering if anyone has used steroid cream in pregnancy? I was using eumovate up until couple of weeks ago and just found out I’m pregnant. Really worried I have caused damage as it says not to use when pregnant or trying to get pregnant

Hi I’m just wondering if anyone got back to you in this as I’ve just been prescribed the same and I’m currently 9 weeks.. doctor and pharmacist said it’s fine for short term.

Yes, I’ve used both eumovate and Betnovate (which is stronger) on and off during the course of my pregnancy due to debilitating dermatitis.
My GP was happy to prescribe what I needed and if you look at the NHS website, it also says most topical steroids are safe in pregnancy (www.nhs.uk/conditions/topical-steroids/)
I spent hours reading through studies
on use of topical steroids in pregnancy and concluded that there were no obvious safety risks, proper controlled studies haven’t been carried out, and the reason on the label it’s not recommended during pregnancy without a doctor’s recommendation is because trials in pregnant woman haven’t been carried out.

Don’t let this stress you out, people do far worse things before finding out they they’re pregnant and go on to have healthy babies.

I’ve always had eczema but it’s gone mental on my hands due to pregnancy. I tried for ages not to use steroid creams or just hydrocortisone and it just got worse and worse. I’m now using tiny bits of elocon or eumovate to keep it at bay, because otherwise the dr says I run the risk of infection. My mum’s a midwife and said that few studies that have been done are on oral steroids and the risk is much lower with ointments. Plus one of the main risks they say are cleft palates and I think she said that would be fully formed by 9 weeks anyway.

Just to add to @Robin223 the link to topical steroid use and cleft palate was from one research paper with very low study participants. Several more recent papers have found no link between topical steroid use and cleft palate defects.

There was another recent well written review of the data but I don’t have it to hand atm! As you can tell, I’ve thought about this a lot 😅

I use demovate and midwife said fine. I'm 7+6.
Also used emovate in my other pregnancy and healthy 2.5 year old sat next to me.

Thank you so much, definitely feel better about it now. I thought it would be ok you just worry so much about everything but like you say people do far worse!
