Brown Discharge @ 16 weeks

Hi All,

Currently 16+2 with DC3. On Sunday morning I woke up with a large amount of brown discharge upon wiping, nothing in my underwear strangely, but a large amount when wiping, to the point I had to continue wiping over and over (sorry TMI). Anyway cue panic stations and a call to the midwife who advises me to visit local A&E.

Had blood tests, urine sample and scan; All fine, baby looks and sounds exactly as he/she should at this stage. No explanation as to what the cause of discharge was and off home we go.

By Sunday evening the discharge seemed to have trailed off and only small amounts on Monday. Early hours of Tuesday morning I then woke again with large amounts of brown discharge, midwife advises another well-being scan and checks babies heartbeat; again all good.

Now I know that generally brown discharge is nothing to worry about as it's old blood, but I'm just curious if anyone had anything similar and managed to figure out what caused it?

Midwives are not overly concerned, and probably rightly so, however it does send me in to a panic every time it happens. Is this just something I may have to deal with this time around?

Bloods and urine have all come back clear which rules out any sort of infectionConfused

Hi just come accross your thread, i am experiencing the exact same thing as u, im 16 weeks 4 days and started getting brown discharge 4 days ago which started off as red blood so had to have the anti d injection due to my blood type but since then it has just gone to a brown discharge and again not enough to go on a pad or underwear, did u find a cause for this or was it just a random thing

Hi @pancakes91 no never did find any cause for it. All my bloods, scans and checks came back fine thankfully. I'm now 38 weeks today.

My midwife did say it could have been 'leftover period blood' but no cause for concern and never had anything after that incident.

Good luck to you!

@Pancakes91 I've had bleeding in both of my pregnancies. The first was at 36 weeks and this one at 14 weeks. The first time no real cause was mentioned although they checked my cervix and mentioned a "graze." This time the midwife explained to me that the cervix undergoes a lot of changes during pregnancy to get ready for birth etc. and sometimes this can result in some bleeding. The doctor said they never call bleeding in pregnancy normal so to always get it checked out but it is quite common. Hopefully it won't happen for either of us again now - i'm about 17 weeks now and had nothing since!

I had that when I waspregnant with ds 18 years ago, went to the toilet at work, wiped & brown blood, rang exh in an absolute panic as I had previously had 2 MC. Went straight to EPU who refused to see me without a referral from GP, saw GP who simply signed me off work but refused to refer me, had a week of hell until next MW appointment who used doppler & left me hear a heartbeat. Rest of pregnancy was fine.
