Didn't know I was pregnant- worried!

I just found out I'm 5wks 3 days.. the last week and a half I've restored my kitchen. All I've done is painted and primed with very poor ventilation. I actually felt sick from the fumes. I had no idea I could be pregnant as my period dates were all over the place this time round. There were 5/6 days at 4 weeks where I was just inhaling paint fumes. Oil paint too. Tmi but I even had gold tinged mucus from the spray paint I'd used on the handles Sad

I'm trying not to panic but failing miserably. A friend swears her child was cleft from inhaling too many fumes during her first trimester. None of their children before or after had any clefts. I did paint with my first child but that was water based, ventilated and I was 35 weeks. It was also just a day.

Have you looked at what it says on the tin?

fumedup · 30/03/2022 16:47

I wouldn't worry too much. The placenta won't have taken over yet, so I doubt much if any would have transferred to the baby. If you're worried though, ask your midwife or GP

Don’t worry, the placenta hadn't taken over then so it wouldn’t have passed over! My suggestion would be to help your nervous get an early private scan booked in for around 7-8 weeks, that’ll break up your wait till your next 12ish week scan is due

Just want to quash the myth that things don't get to the baby "before the placenta has taken over" - the baby still absorbs things from your blood before this.

Nevertheless transfer is very slow at such an early stage as five weeks and you and your baby will almost certainly be fine. Mention it to the midwife when you book in if you like but expect her to wave your concerns away! Xx
