Scans and other care in Scotland - Glasgow

Hi, first time post - I'm about 12.5 weeks with 1st - bit of a surprise but getting used to it.

Spoke to doc this morning, and it seems that NHS in Glasgow only scans once - waiting for appointment - for dating, doesn't do nuchal test and no further scan at 20 weeks. Looks like I will be at Southern General - just wondered if anyone had any experience of care there, and can also confirm the scan situation. I'm thinking about having a private scan if there really is only one scan. I'm 35, and worried about Downs etc, and I know this isn't as important, but I will want to know whether it's a boy or girl in advance too!

Thanks in advance.

hi there. congratulations! i had ds2 at the southern gen 3 months ago. was generally v happy with standard of care. I had a nuchal scan at Nuffield (about £200) then a 20 week scan scan there too (another £200 but they threw in a bit of 4D for that too). YOu can ask for a look round the labour ward at the southern which i would recommend. THey have a good birth pool room which i was in. THey will also allow you to bring your own inflatable pool to be used in other rooms if the birth pool room occupied.

I had dd by caeserean at the SGH in Sep 06. I had a very good experience overall and the staff were all excellent. I loved the fact that I ended up in a room with only 2 beds. As i was the window bed it felt like i had a private room. I too was a bit annoyed about only getting one scan but I ended up having a couple more at 38 weeks as dd was breech. I believe that they have stated once the queen mother hosp shuts, they will be able to offer 2 scans.

Hello, and thank you both for your replies. Glad you both had a positive experience at SG. I think the scan situation is appalling - and have fired off hormonally-charged email to Nicola Sturgeon telling her so! Will wait to see what her political guff excuses reply is. Looks like I'll be taking some cash from the bambino fund for a private scan. I'll have a poke around the SG when I go.

I thought that after the age of 35 you would be automatically referred for more than one scan?
