NIPT gender wrong?

Hi all
How accurate is the NIPT for gender? I saw a tiktok last night of someone who said the gender was wrong and there were loads of comments of people who said the same. I googled it and it does appear this is a thing.

I had the nipt at 10w, 10% fetal fraction and was told I'm having a girl.

I'm 16+5 so I'll guess they can look at the 20w scan but now I'm quite uncertain.

I had one at about 10w too, said girl and it was right.

I mean I guess there is a 50/50 chance and I'm not bothered either way but o want to plan

No gender scan or test can guarantee 100 percent accuracy so it’s always best not to go overboard buying clothes etc. I know at least 3 people who have been told the opposite gender to what they had. One was told 3 times via a test and scan.

Beachsidesunset · 30/03/2022 08:29

I had it twice and it was right both times. Just follow it up with a sexing scan later if you need to.

Frankincense88 · 30/03/2022 09:36

I had a NIPT at 11 weeks, 9% fetal fraction. At the bottom of my report it said that the accuracy is something like 96.7%. Much more accurate than a scan as they look at the chromosomes / DNA in your blood.

Juno231 · 30/03/2022 11:27

It depends on which test you had done. Most have 99% accuracy but the new sneak peek tests you can do at home are not reliable at all as they can easily get contaminated with Y chromosome by any boy/man in the house.

Carebear99 · 30/03/2022 11:41

I had the IONA test

No test can predict gender.

LittleGwyneth · 30/03/2022 11:45

As @Juno231 - people conflate the home Sneak Peak test with the full NIPT test done by a professional. I don't know of anyone who has found the sex to be incorrect with the latter.

Carebear99 · 30/03/2022 11:48

@dinosauria the nipt can, it separates the mother and fetal dna

OP posts:
annlee3817 · 30/03/2022 11:49

Iona NIPT test is 99.3% accurate for predicting the sex of the baby, based on the extraction of the fetal DNA.

annlee3817 · 30/03/2022 11:50

I think dinosauria is referring to the fact you've said gender instead of sex, always a mumsnetter that pipes up with that 🙄 we all know what you mean.

Carebear99 · 30/03/2022 11:57

@annlee3817 oh my mistake. Thanks! The IONA letter does say sex.

I'm happy as long as the baby is healthy but my secret preference is a girl. I haven't bought anything and won't until I'm 30 weeks anyway.

@Carebear99 sorry I know this post is so old now but can I ask the outcome? Did you have a girl? Had my NIPT at 10w with fetal fraction at 10% and told girl, wondering how reliable x

Mine was accurate, with 10% Fetal Fraction, she's now a very mischievous 2 year old :)
