I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thank you @Snowwhite2020 @buntywindermere @ElephantGrey101 @LucindaE for sharing your advice and experiences.

@ElephantGrey101 my boy is a poor sleeper so this is definitely something I need to consider!
Hope you all have a restful evening x

I wrote a really long message but my phone lost it...

My sickness is worse since catching covid 2 weeks. Now about 50% of the time I end up being sick when I cough. Also I can't really take tablets anymore. It's such a ordeal trying to swallow them, I'm now only taking my antidepressants and anti-sickness. I've given up with any vitamins. (I'm 34 weeks)

I see a few people talking about how people think they're all right because they're not hugging the toilet. My husband is like this, if I'm not sat saying I feel sick every 2 minutes he assumes I'm fine.

At Easter he wanted us to take a holiday in this country going by train. More recently it feels like he thinks I'm going to magically get better and do all the cleaning and tidying jobs that haven't been done since December.

I see someone commenting how BF caused nausea. I didn't know this was a thing, I was looking forward to BF. How many women end up feeling sick from it?

LucindaE · 04/07/2022 21:15

Spottybutterfly Sorry to hear about the Covid. That's nasty. Sorry too that you are still suffering at 34 weeks, and OH expects too much. I think you are going to have to moan more! I honestly wouldn't worry about the breast feeding and nausea and or vomiting. I have been doing these threads for over ten years, and in that time, I have heard about maybe eleven cases who were nauseated by the let down including me all that time ago. It's worth bearing in mind that it possibly might happen, but it is very rare. Most sufferers find the sickness is gone within a couple of days of birth, thank goodness, so don't let it spoil your pleasure in looking forward to breast feeding.
christmasbox Waves. I'm glad the advice was useful.

ohCARP · 04/07/2022 21:47

@Spottybutterfly I had nausea with breastfeeding but only if I tried to snack while I did it. If I was hungry my husband would make me something but as soon as I started feeding I would be repulsed. It lasted a few months but wasn't unmanageable. I just timed my eating around when feeds would be so I didn't end up starving but stuck feeding for ages.

Try not to worry. I still managed to breast feed for 14 months and then my daughter decided she didn't want it anymore and weaned herself.

ElephantGrey101 · 05/07/2022 13:51

I have just vomited up blood. I called the hospital and they said that it is probably because I have irritated my throat by being sick but I don’t need to come in. Has anyone else had this?

Snowwhite2020 · 05/07/2022 13:58

@ElephantGrey101 I’m sorry you experienced this- it is so horrible. It happened to me with my first pregnancy and actually happened to me day before yesterday too- but only a little and at the end. I have never brought up a huge amount of blood. I didn’t go in to hospital for it because I assumed it was irritation from all the sickness but it’s a personal call- if you feel you need to, then I would. Mine also never happened twice in a row. Again, if it did happen a few times in a row I think I would be going in.

love to you. It’s so miserable xx

ElephantGrey101 · 05/07/2022 18:13

Thank you Snowwhite. I am sorry this has happened to you too. I think it is definitely an irritation from all the sickness. Apparently red blood is less bad as it is likely to be in your throat.

LucindaE · 05/07/2022 18:36

ElephantGrey101 and Snowwhite2020 Sympathies. I had this too. It looks alarming, but as you say and the hospital say, is probably from the throat. They tend to want to check on brown blood, but that is more unsuual.

Question please ladies. Sent in desperation!!does Prochlorprrazine (spelling!) have a cumulative effect over time or should it be if it's going to work it will work right away?

Snowwhite2020 · 05/07/2022 20:41

@ElephantGrey101 yes mine was bright red and at the end….. ! What we go through is pretty unbelievable. Good to know about the brown blood @LucindaE I’ll keep an eye out for that but blood in general is unusual for me, though it has happened. Hope everyone is ok tonight xx

LucindaE · 06/07/2022 21:06

ohhollyfred I hope someone can help with your query asap. Although I take that for migraines these days, I didn't take it when suffering, so I'm not sure about a cummulative effect.
Waves to "Snowwhite2020* ElephantGrey101 and everyone...

OP posts:
BalletN · 06/07/2022 21:39

@ohhollyfred I'm not sure but it might have a cumulative effect. I take 2 prochloperazine per day (plus cyclizine). I was feeling better so tried to cut out one tablet a day. My vomiting then got worse and I had to increase the dose again but not till 4 days later, which makes me think it could possibly be cumulative. If it isn't working for you though, go back to the gp, don't suffer. They can keep adding in meds until you find a combination that helps xx

Snowwhite2020 · 06/07/2022 22:32

@ohhollyfred I think most of the medicines are cumulative (though that is not a qualified opinion- just the ones I’ve been on.) I hope you are starting to feel some relief?

@BalletN i find that Cyclizine makes me very tired which in the first tri was difficult in top of the usual pregnancy tiredness… like you, benefits outweighed the negatives for me though.

hope everyone is ok tonight. Xx

SairaBear · 06/07/2022 23:13

Hi all,

Long term lurker here, currently 21 weeks into my second HG pregnancy. I’ve had a lot of great advice and comfort from this thread in both pregnancies (thanks @LucindaE especially!) and thought I should finally post now I have some relevant experience to share.

I am still breastfeeding my daughter, just morning and evening. I’m on cyclizine, omeprazole and ondansetron, which my GP said could pass into milk in small doses but she was fine with, and my own reading reassured me, especially as my daughter takes so little milk now. She’s not at all constipated so clearly not getting much ondansetron!

My rationale was that she is at little risk from the drugs, she’s very determined not to give up feeding yet, and mostly that I just couldn’t bear the thought of less sleep. Plus it’s about the only time she gets 1:1 time with me now I’m so sicky and tired.

It hasn’t been easy, but for me easier than stopping seems. It hurts a bit when she starts feeding which I think is the pregnancy hormones. It’s also infuriating sometimes having to dump her in her cot and run to the toilet or nearest bowl when she’s nearly asleep! I was lucky to start the drugs early and have been able to not get too dehydrated/calorie low this time (only lost 3kg, already back at pre-pregnancy weight and generally quite healthy this time considering the amount I vomit) so it’s been manageable. If I’d had any worse HG I would’ve definitely stopped, I have seriously considered it.

SairaBear · 06/07/2022 23:14

Ugh I tried to reply to @christmasbox ’s message from a while back but it turns out being a lurker means I have no idea how Mumsnet actually works!

christmasbox · 07/07/2022 11:56

@SairaBear thank you for sharing your experiences.

Glad to hear you have a supportive gp. I also took ondansetron for a while in my previous pregnancy so good to hear you are taking it and the other drugs with little effect on your daughter.

Hopefully when I get pregnant I'll be able to start the drugs early again and then like you I'll have to make a decision based upon my symptoms at the time.

Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy!

Hyperemesishell · 07/07/2022 12:40

Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and has any advice.

I have just finished tapering down a course of Prednisone following a 10 day stay in hospital with hyperemesis. I was on the steroids for 7 weeks and have just finished completely. I am still on cyclizine, Promethazine & ondansetron but feel like my sickness & extreme nausea is back with a vengeance.

I have an appointment with the consultant next Wednesday but just wanted to know if anyone had experienced anything similar following coming off the steroids and had any advice/words of wisdom?! I was finally starting to have some days of minimal sickness/nausea but feel like I’ve gone back 6 weeks.

Snowwhite2020 · 07/07/2022 13:36

Love to you @Hyperemesishell this sounds truly horrendous for you to have to endure. Xx

LucindaE · 07/07/2022 20:49

Hyperemesishell Welcome. Sorry you have been suffering badly. I hope someone can advise you who has been on those meds. Various sufferers who had it badly on here have in the past. Can you contact the doctor who prescribed the steroids to advise you about an ongoing care plan? It might be a good idea to phone Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 who will phone back with good advice. Just in case this is your first Hyperemesis pregnancy, I attach my normal spiel which I hope might help. Ignore the parts which don't apply, obviously. Sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
SairaBear I am so glad you have found this thread helpful. Great advice about your experiences with breast feeding, which I am sure others will find very useful. Thank you for posting.
Great advice from Snowwhite2020 and BalletN.

@Hyperemesishell I do not have any good advice as I have never taken steroids but I just wanted to send you love because it must be awful. Can you phone the hospital for more advice. They may be able to advise and might get you back. How far along are you?

Thanks so much, I am seeing the consultant on Wednesday so I’m hoping to hold out until then as I was only in most recently last week so don’t really want to be admitted again! I am 22 weeks (starting to lose hope it will end before 40 now!) x

Spottybutterfly · 08/07/2022 16:12

I did find it eased around 16-18 weeks, then ramped back up bit eased again around 25 weeks. My symptoms have got worse but I put that down to 2 things, catching covid again and the fact baby is massive so giving me reflux, which is a new reason to vomit.

I'm 5f1 and baby is on the 97th percentile which basically means it taking up my whole torso.

LucindaE · 08/07/2022 20:49

Hyperemesishell It has improved for others past that date. Glad you are seeing the doctor soon.
Spottybutterfly Aagh! About such a big baby. I hope the residual Covid effects go off soon. None of the anti-acids help with the acidity, then? That is dismal.

OP posts:
LucindaE · 09/07/2022 20:50

I hope everyone is coping in this hot weather.

OP posts:
Snowwhite2020 · 09/07/2022 21:17

@Spottybutterfly definitely ask for an anti acid if you are not on one…

to report back, the omeprazole is definitely helping with the nausea and sickness when taken alongside Cyclizine! Good news.

it is very hot. Hope everyone is coping xx
