I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thanks ladies.
@Melleebacca You are almost there! Have you got your list ready for after the birth? When I had my first, I had a list of foods I wanted my mum to bring me!

@Jani92 I hope the sickness eases for the rest of your holiday!

handbagsandholidays · 10/05/2022 17:23

Hi Ladies,

I'm joining this thread at almost 20 weeks pregnant. This is my second HG pregnancy. I was hoping my sickness would tail off in my second trimester but it's becoming worse. Just had my first hospital stay for IV fluids and cannot believe how much they lack compassion. The staff were taking a long while to come and collect my urine sample and there was a tub of sticks in my bathroom so I tested it myself so I had an idea of whether I still had ketones and I did. They me told
me I just had traces but it was +++ on the strip chart when I looked at it. I daren't correct them as I know I wasn't supposed to test my urine myself. They minimised the amount that I was sick as I tend to vomit in small mouthfuls multiple times rather than huge heaves. I have to sit with a sick bowl beside me all day as it is that frequent. The whole experience in hospital was just awful and I'm being discharged home this afternoon despite the fact that I know I still have ketones in my urine and I'm still being sick. Just needed a safe space to vent.

LucindaE · 10/05/2022 19:24

handbagsandholidays Welcome to the thread nobody wants to join! As you are a veteran, you don't need my normal spiel. I am sorry that you are suffeirng badly still. Did it improve after 20 weeks in your first pregnancy? What meds are you on? It is bad that they were so unsympathetic in hospitals. I do sometimes wonder why some nurses take up that career, as they seem to lack empathy. Maybe, when you have recovered, you might lodge a complaint about that treatment. It is particularly bad that they were lying about the ketones, and I see your difficulty about how to challenge that.
Mellebacca I do think you and all those who suffer throughout and go for it again deserve a medal, as I have no doubt often said before.
Jani92 That's a disappointment. I hope it was just a bad day and things improve for the rest of the holiday.
Apologies for anyone rudely overloooked.

@Sicksmellymess how have you been managing?? The Cariban tablets just arrived today! Valid expiry and valid batch number :) phew what a relief! I’ve still no update on Xonvea though! Hopefully your Cariban arrive in the next few days.

KatieJayne86 · 11/05/2022 12:24

XONVEA

Hi all - I've joined to express my sheer desperation over Xonvea :( I'm 5 days without now and getting sicker and sicker.

I contacted Alliance Pharmaceuticals who gave me the name of the new supplier - I'm yet to hear but I can see some of you have heard 21st may?

I'm so so gutted to be in this situation as I'd literally just started to see a glimpse of life again! Xx

Sicksmellymess · 11/05/2022 12:51

@ChloeHel im day 3 without Xonvea the Sleepaid and vitamin B6 seem to do be doing the trick for me so far
you can try this combo which is the two main ingredients of Xonvea @KatieJayne86 or look back at the link @ChloeHel shared

KatieJayne86 · 11/05/2022 13:05

Oh that's really interesting. Thank you. I did a quick Google and only seem to see sleep aid tablets more than the 10mg that's in xonvea?

Sicksmellymess · 11/05/2022 13:45

@KatieJayne86 thats true, there’s 10mg of doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin b6) in each Xonvea tablet. If you take two at night like the instructions say then you’re taking 20mg of doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine hydrochloride every night. The Sleepaid is 25mg so I take one Sleepaid (or you can also get unisom) and two 10mg vitamin b6

KatieJayne86 · 11/05/2022 14:12

Oh yes, that's true! I was taking 2 a night, and one in the morning and another at about 2pm. So I was on the full 4 a day.

I've just had this reply...

Sicksmellymess · 11/05/2022 14:56

@KatieJayne86 i got an email on Friday just gone saying it would be solved this week, previously to that I was told the first week in May so they’re putting it back every week! Wish they’d just stop messing people about now

ChloeHel · 11/05/2022 15:09

@Sicksmellymess ah I’m so glad the sleepaid is working for you! Atleast you know if Xonvea does go long term out of stock you can manage on them! And you’ve got a month worth of Cariban on the way haven’t you?

@KatieJayne86 yes the two of us have been trying to find all alternatives for Xonvea! I found a Spanish site that will deliver Cariban; which is the Irish version of Xonvea. I have just had mine delivered today.

www.mediplus.me/product/cariban-hard-24-capsules-modified-release-10-10-mg/

The date on my pharmacy systems says 21st May for return of stock, but I’m not relying on that as I work in pharmacy so I know how often these dates aren’t reliable :(

KatieJayne86 · 11/05/2022 15:40

Oh, not good :( I might reply to that effect then!!

LucindaE · 11/05/2022 17:43

Welcome to KatieJayne86. It's an awful situation. Sicksmellymess That's really useful. You must be a pharmacist, I'm guessing? ChloeHell I am so glad they have arrived.

@BalletN I haven’t written my food list yet. Mostly I’m excited to be able to want and like Chocolate again.

@ChloeHel @KatieJayne86 @Sicksmellymess Im so glad you’re figuring out how to get around this supplier issue! I hope you all have a solution soon and the sickness eases.

Still ticking along over here. I’ve got 7 days left at work. Baby is “as low as he can be without being born” according to the midwife, so just gotta keep him in a few more days. I haven’t been sleeping well, I keep waking up with insomnia in the middle of the night, so hopefully that goes soon.

LovesFood1987 · 11/05/2022 19:54

Hi everyone, please can I join? I'm 7+3 into my 2nd HG pregnancy and starting to feel truly horrific 😞😞😞 the end just feels impossibly far away and in truth I had forgotten how awful HG is.

To make it worse I've had 4 miscarriages since my first pregnancy so I'm terrified about taking drugs in case cause the baby to die 😞

Much love to everyone in the group, this group for me through my last pregnancy and I'm hoping to end up with a live baby grim this pregnancy too xx

ohCARP · 11/05/2022 20:38

Welcome @LovesFood1987! Im so sorry you're suffering so much again. You probably know all the tips and tricks if you've done this before but know we're all here in solidarity.

A few of us can relate to the miscarriages and worrying about causing harm to the baby but please don't suffer out of fear. Have you had a scan at EPAU? Once they've seen a heartbeat the risk of miscarriage drops right down, however I don't know how far you were when you lost your previous babies so that may not be relevant to you.

It's a long long road and it does feel hopeless sometimes but it will get better. Fortunately (or not?) we're all in the same boat so we can feel rubbish together. You can do this!

LovesFood1987 · 11/05/2022 21:46

@ohCARP thanks so much for your reply. How far are through are you now?

Yes I've had a 6 week and 7 week scan and everything looks like it's developing normally with heart rate/size etc so that's a positive at least.

Thanks so much again for replying, it's so isolating having HG sometimes and this group is a ray of hope.

Melleebacca · 12/05/2022 05:15

@LovesFood1987 I’m sorry to hear you’re in the trenches. I had HG till we lost our last baby at 17wks. The meds were not the reason we lost him, it was because of severe genetic malformations, that happened at conception.
I am a strong advocate of not trying to kill yourself by refusing the meds. It’s better to keep you and baby alive and as healthy as can be, with the meds. Especially considering that the strong majority of them are anti-histamine based.
I hope you get some relief soon. HG is such a tough mental and physical disease.

LovesFood1987 · 12/05/2022 13:55

@Melleebacca I'm so sorry you lost your little boy so late on, that must have been awful for you.

Thanks for the advice, I've been to the gp to start cyclizine today, hopefully it helps.

Hope everyone else is surviving xx

HayleyCampbell · 12/05/2022 18:08

Hi ladies,

I'm currently 12 weeks expecting twins, have had awful nausea since about 6 weeks but nothing more. Then Monday evening I started being violently sick which continued hourly until weds morning. Thought it was a tummy bug as then nothing but today I've woken up feeling incredibly ill again all day, and have just had another projectile out of nowhere.

Is it worth speaking to gp/mw yet or do I need to ride it out for a bit?! Thought I'd start feeling better approaching 2nd trimester, not a million times worse 😭 thanks in advance for any wisdom xx

LucindaE · 12/05/2022 19:29

Welcome to HayleyCampbell and LovesFood1987 . LovesFood1987 I am sorry for your losses. I had only one, and that made me nervous enough in my subsequent pregnancy. I am glad you have had the reassurance of the scan showing the heartbeat and are on Cyclizine. If that doesn't help in a few days, don't hesitate to ask for something stronger. There's a new drug called Xonvea, but to say there are supply issues at the moment is an underestimate. Great advice from others. ohCARP Good advice about a heartbreat and the chances of miscarriage dropping massively when one is visible.
HayleyCampbell Congratulations on your twins. That is exciting. Sufferers from Hyperemesis do tend to suffer longer than those who have normal pregnancy sickness, and after all, even those with that often do suffer up to 14 weeks or so. Sufferers on this thread expecting twins often recover more quickly than those with singleton pregnancies, as I suppose it is only the double dose of hormones that tips them over into Hyperemesis, which they wouldn't have had with a singleton pregnancy. Do ask for meds, as you don't want to become dehydrated. I enclose my normal speil, which I hope may be helpful.
Here is my normal speil, which I hope helps. Ignore the parts which don't apply, obviously. Sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
Melleebacca Only seven more days at work, good. Cheering you on!

Hi - i’m new to Mumsnet and have come looking for a little advice, hopefully i’m in the right place!

I’m 12 weeks into my first pregnancy and I am really struggling with the sickness to the point I have wondered if I am suffering from HG - though some accounts I have read do seem to be much more extreme. I have felt extremely nauseous every day from the moment i wake up to the moment i sleep, for about six weeks now. I’ve had to be signed off work because I cannot function day to day. I have to stay laying down or I’ll throw up. I have tried two different anti sickness tablets prescribed by GP all which make me feel wiped out all day, and don’t stop me feeling sick even if I might vomit slightly less.

I have barely left the house for weeks.. All i can do is stay bed or get to the living room to watch tv. Not knowing how long this is going to last is now making me anxious as every day feels like the last one i can possibly endure.

I have tried a couple of times to speak to my midwife team about whether this is normal - from what I read “normal” morning sickness should still allow me to go about my day to day life, work etc.. but to be honest I feel like any attempts I make to express my concerns are dismissed and i’m made to feel a bit silly for thinking I might be worse than anyone else. Most people I speak to don’t seem to grasp the problem - except my husband and parents who have seen my living reality over recent weeks, but who are pretty helpless in it all.

Does what I describe sound like something on the HG scale??

LovesFood1987 · 13/05/2022 10:55

@Laylachouchou that sounds horrible 😞 I can relate so much to a lot you've said and it gets very depressing being unable to do things all the time because of feeling so ill. It does sound to me like HG and I'd speak to your GP. Sorry your midwife isn't more sympathetic, I found the midwife in my first pregnancy like that too and it's horrible to feel dismissed by medical professionals.

Every day with HG feels like a month, no one seems to grasp how ill you feel. I find HG very lonely. This is my 2nd HG pregnancy and all I can say is you WILL get through it, congratulate yourself on surviving each day because everyday is miserable with HG.

Georgie2022 · 13/05/2022 16:44

Hi all,
Ive been lurking for a little while and have checked out a lot of the useful links and info you’ve all shared, but decided to join mumsnet and post today because I feel kid I’m getting lower and lower. I’m 9 weeks at the moment and for the last ten days or so I’ve had lots of severe sickness. I was off work last week and mostly slept or laid on the sofa, worked Monday and Tuesday but it was awful and so have been off since Wednesday. I spoke to my GP on Wednesday who prescribed cyclizine and said to call back if I couldn’t keep anything down but yesterday was my most awful day yet and I couldn’t keep anything down at all, even small amounts of water. I called back today, that GP is not in, had to chase up my message after hearing nothing only to be told they’ve given me what they can, I’ve not given it enough of a chance and I need to see how I go over the weekend. I’m so frustrated and feel totally dismissed.

Does anyone know if cyclizine does take a few days to work or not? The NICE guidelines say about reassessing after 24 hours so that kinda suggests they should help sooner?
