How many early scans did you have?

Hi all...this pregnancy has turned me into a nervous wreck particularly since its an IVF pregnancy. I had a scan at 7w4d and showed that everything is progressing well but now my anxiety has started to kick in again. Im contemplating on whether I should have another scan at 9w or 10w? Has anyone ever had weekly scans?

I had one at 7 weeks (NHS), 8 weeks (NHS) and private at 10 weeks. The gap between 8 and 12 weeks seemed huge especially since I'd had 3 previously early losses.

I had private one at 8 weeks, one at 10 weeks and then my NHS one at 12 weeks - well worth the money for reassurance. X

So far I’ve had NHS ones at 6, 8 and 11 weeks, with dating scan also next Friday, plus a private scan at 10 weeks. I’ve had some bleeding episodes, one of which was very heavy, so have had extras on top of early ones as a result of previous losses x

Lijay1 · 26/03/2022 16:24

I had private at 8 weeks and just booked one for 10 weeks on Monday. I wanted to wait until 12 weeks but my nerves just can't wait that long!

Gamechanger2019 · 26/03/2022 18:22

You do whatever works for you, if you can afford private one before your 12 week go for it!

Lifeisstressful · 27/03/2022 08:33

We had our IVF clinic one at 7 weeks, private at 8, nhs at 12, private at 16, nhs at 20 and 22. I’m high risk due to medical reasons not the IVF so had the 22 week scan and will have more scans at 32,36,40.

I think if you can afford it then it’s lovely to do until you’re feeling baby. I no longer desperately need scans because I can feel her moving and kicking. It really has helped my worries. X

Absolutely do what you need to do. As much as early scans are not going to change any outcome, I just could not stand the thought not knowing all was OK (at that moment) and had several scans before 12 weeks with both of mine - IVF clinic at 7 weeks, private around 9 / 10 weeks and private at 16 weeks. (also had an NHS scan at 8 weeks with one due to bleeding - all OK)

Everyone is different - some people happily announce their pregnancy as soon as they get a positive test, others wait even for the 20 week scan. Some people would have increased anxiety from multiple scans and others are comforted by them. Do what you need to.

RedTangerine · 27/03/2022 08:57

None - the idea of it made me more anxious. And I think sometimes they can cause unnecessary worry.
It's about what you think will help you.

BrilloSolar · 27/03/2022 09:04

Also, for what it's worth, I think it's completely normal to feel how you are after IVF.

I'm so very lucky that we've had 2 successful pregnancies out of 4 embryos, with no losses - just 2 that didn't take. There are many, many reasons we won't try for a 3rd baby, but I honestly think that the very worst part of trying again would be that time after getting a positive test. Of course it's devastating when it doesn't work at all, and I'd hate to be insensitive to all those who have never managed to even get that far. But certainly for me, the most stressful part of the whole IVF journey was that time from getting a positive until the 12 week scan, and then again up to the 16 week scan - just waiting for something to go wrong. I just really don't think I could cope with that anxiety again.

CoalCraft · 27/03/2022 09:05

I had two scans before ten weeks in both my pregnancies, but they were all in the epu on the NHS due to bleeding. I've never had an early scan and think they'd be a waste of money for me; they never stopped the worry for more than a few hours anyway.

I believe more than one every two weeks is not recommended unless there's a medical reason for it?

CoalCraft · 27/03/2022 09:06

Sorry that should say I've never had a private scan

Hi hun, I am 10+5 now and I had 6week scan with EPAU due to spotting, after that 7weeks scan with EPAU due to bleeding and 8w2d private scan due to passing some very concerning clots and more blood.

I am waiting now for my 12weeks scan (10days left) and tbh I am freaking out, but I have no way to go for a scan earlier as I am at home with COVID and don't think I will get negative test any time soon 🤯 but If I could- I would love to go for a scan now, after 4 MC it's hard to stay sane in those first 12weeks without being constantly reassured that everything is fine .

LondonladyTTC · 27/03/2022 11:46

I had my IVF viability scan at 7+2, then one at 9 weeks, and I have one next week at 10+4 for my harmony test. If I didn't have one coming up for the harmony test I think I would be getting booked in for another scan as have also been very anxious!

Moancup · 27/03/2022 14:42

None. It’s easy to say as someone who hasn’t experienced pregnancy anxiety, but I’m very suspicious at how private clinics have been able to create a profit making agenda where it’s normal to have early scans. It serves no medical purpose and only a snapshot of reassurance.

Jayjane79 · 27/03/2022 15:13

I've had 3 private 6,8 and 10 weeks and just had my first NHS scan. Back for the gender scan at 16 lol. Worth every penny.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 27/03/2022 15:18

I had two. 7/8 weeks and 10 weeks. I thought the first one would put my mind at rest but it didn’t. The second one put my mind at rest for a bit longer but I was counting down to my dating scan. I then had another scan at 16 weeks, my anomaly scan at 20 weeks and another scan at 32 weeks.

Chanel05 · 27/03/2022 16:13

I had a private scan at 7 weeks and another at 11 weeks in my pregnancy with my dd.

In my first pregnancy, I had a scan at 6 weeks when I saw a heartbeat and then again at 9 weeks when the heartbeat had stopped and I was told I'd had a mmc.

In my second pregnancy I found that my private scan gave me comfort for a few days but then I panicked again because I knew anything could change at any given moment. I'd have early scans again but I know that a scan is reflective of that given moment, not long term.
