Low PAPP- A

Hi mumsnetters.

I am 15 weeks pregnant with my second baby. I had the scan last week, and then screening bloods taken. I was told I would get a call after three days if there were issues. I got a call. The midwife said low risk for everything, but that I had low PAPP-A.

She explained that this increases risk of a preterm baby and low birth weight, but not to worry. My son was 2 weeks late and over 10lbs, so I didn’t expect this as a consideration at all.

I’ve been booked in for additional scans and prescribed aspirin.

Please let me know your experiences if you have also had this.

Hi my papp A was extremely low (0.22 mom)... gave me a high risk 1/5 for baby to have down syndrome and 1/89 for the other two, luckily he was fine. He did arrive 3 weeks early but was a good weight (6lb 7oz). It was lovely to have all the extra scans. It's very common to have low papp a and usually everything works out fine!

Lots of posts here on Papp-a if you do a search. Incredibly common these days and most pregnancies don’t have any negative outcomes. Personally mine was 0.24 and I had growth scans but no issues with baby or placenta . Don’t worry

Low Papp A is very common. Lots of trusts don't even test for it or provide any precautionary treatment for it, but some trusts it is routinely checked alongside your screening tests where it is then discovered. (For those who opt not to have screening, would never know they have Low Papp A)
It just means you will likely have a doppler to test how well your placenta is working around 22-24 weeks (the aspirin should help with blood flow through the placenta) and then growth scans later on in your pregnancy to check babies growth is as expected. All precautionary. I wouldn't be too concerned x

I have been told I have low Papp-a 0.15 and also low hcg 0.53 which has put me high risk for Edwards & Patau —

@SAJ70 im sorry but it wasn’t good news for me, my girl ended up having Patau’s and we lost her at 16.5 weeks … (I ended up having an amnio to confirm the suspected Patau’s )
I hope this isn’t the case for you 💖 I know what an awful time is for you. 🤍🤍

Oh scary times, I had Low Papp-A and ended up having a sever growth restriction. Had to do check ups in hospital from week 20 onwards, and an emergency c-section in week 33, as baby stopped growing and blood flow was reversed.

Baby was 1.3 kg when born and on the 0.4th centile but couldn't be healthier now. (5years). I'm glad they found it early as I really did receive amazing car as soon as they saw I had low Papp-A!

Hi @bowpi I hope you don’t mind me asking but how did you know baby had stopped growing, was this picked up during a growth scan? So happy to hear this was spotted and they took good care of you both!

bowpi · 08/11/2022 05:41

Yes because of low PappA they did a few more growth scans than just the 20 week one - but they already noticed it there that it wasnt as big as its supposed to be to be honest. From that week they booked me regular growth scans an on the one at 32 week they noticed the blood flow and kept me in hospital
