14w, can't find the heartbeat on a doppler

I had a scan earlier this week but I've been trying without success to find the heartbeat on a doppler. Does anyone have any advice?

Home dopplers are extremely unreliable. Don't panic but do call your midwife though x

firstimemamma · 12/03/2022 14:07

Bin the Doppler and rely on the midwives to do it.

Jupiter92 · 12/03/2022 14:07

Don’t use a Doppler! Even midwives don’t use them before 16 weeks because it can be hard to find.
My doctor took about 3-5 mins to find the heartbeat when I was 18 weeks pregnant. Leave it to the trained professionals because you could pick up; nothing, the umbilical cord, your own heartbeat and all of that is unreliable.
I hope your anxiety eases but using a doppler won’t help it do so x

DropYourSword · 12/03/2022 14:08

Honestly the best advice is just don't.

YouBoggleMyMind · 12/03/2022 14:09

As PP says, they're unreliable and not recommended for use at home. Midwives don't try to find a heartbeat with a doppler until 16 week appointment (in UK). Speak to your midwife for guidance.

Tee20x · 12/03/2022 14:09

If you're concerned go to the early pregnancy unit. Don't use Dopplers they are unreliable and cause unneeded concern for this exact reason.

KatieKat88 · 12/03/2022 14:11

My midwife wouldn't even do it at the 16 week appointment as it can be too hard for even them to find and then it freaks expectant parents out! Please bin it and try not to worry!

wishuponastar1988 · 12/03/2022 14:13

My midwife listened in at my 16 week appointment as I was struggling with feeling anxious and it took her a few minutes. She said they don't usually listen until 25 weeks as it is so hard to find! I had a scan at 19 weeks yesterday and they let me hear the heartbeat but baby kept moving so it was really difficult to hear it consistently. X

Rrrob · 12/03/2022 14:13

Bin the doppler. Book a private scan if you need reassurance. Dopplers are not recommended for home use.

WoMandalorian · 12/03/2022 14:14

Don't bother with the home doppler. I never found any of mine before 20 weeks, I could only find my own. They're 5, 2 and 5m now 😅

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 12/03/2022 14:18

My midwives never used the Doppler (GP could never find batteries) - only heard heatbeat at scan appointments.

FelicityPike · 12/03/2022 14:30

Yeah, put the Doppler in the bin!

Marvellousmadness · 12/03/2022 14:31

Advice?l? Yes . ..get rid of doppler

Thats like googling your symptoms whenyou are sick. It just makes you more stressed

ChickpeaPie · 12/03/2022 14:33

Don’t call your midwife, they won’t listen in at 14 weeks. The guidance is to listen from 24 weeks. And that’s for a healthy professional who is trained. Get rid of it

nearlyspringyay · 12/03/2022 14:34

Bin the Doppler.

ChickpeaPie · 12/03/2022 14:35

Btw, home dopplers aren’t unreliable at all, the people using them are

AleynEivlys · 12/03/2022 14:43

Found both mine at 11 and 9 weeks respectively with an AngelSounds home doppler but really had to push down, almost under the pubic bone, and even then it was hit and miss. Some days I'd find it and some days not.

Baby is very low and well hidden at this point. 🤷

wannabeamummysobad · 12/03/2022 14:50

Chuck the Doppler away. My midwife (3) couldn't find my baby's HB at 16 weeks -there were lots of tears (mine, DH and a MW) and in the end they had to scan. Baby was dancing around, happy and healthy. I'm now 33 weeks.

Stay away from Dopplers - if you can't wait for MW appointments go for extra scans.

K2012 · 12/03/2022 15:06

Unless you’re a trained medical professional who knows how to use a doppler, don’t use one. It’ll make you more anxious.
My community midwife wouldn’t even listen to baby’s heartbeat with a doppler at my 15 week appointment and said they don’t do it untill after 24 weeks. Midwife at the hospital said they should be banned from buying in shops!!

Whattodoniw · 12/03/2022 15:20

Don't use these things

Nikki037297 · 12/03/2022 15:27

I’m just turning 10 weeks and sometimes I can’t find it and sometimes I can so don’t worry baby is still small and can move out of the way

twinsetandpearl · 12/03/2022 18:07

As others have said don't use the Doppler there is a reason why midwives don't routinely use them less than 16 weeks

And don't call EPU it's tying up resources for little to no reason

BlueCookieMonster · 12/03/2022 23:10

Don’t use a Doppler, there are so many sounds in the uterus that what you think is a baby might be blood flow to the placenta or your own heartbeat.
