Co-codamol in pregnancy

Hi all.

Currently 24 weeks pregnant and battling a horrid ear infection. I'm on antibiotics but they've not quite kicked in yet and I'm really suffering with the pain. I've slept maybe four hours out of the last 48. Paracetamol only takes the edge off for maybe two hours and then it's agony again.

I called 111 for advice and my GP rang back to confirm that I can take low dose co-codamol if paracetamol isn't helping. So, obviously she wouldn't have said that if it was unsafe to take, but I did the thing you shouldn't have and Googled it and scared myself Blush

Did anyone else take codeine/co-codamol in pregnancy? Was all okay?

Thank you Smile

I took low dose co-codamol for SPD pain,
Many ear infections are caused by viruses so you may not get any improvement with antibiotics, but hope you are feeling better before too long, earache is a horrible kind of pain!

If you can get your hands on some Ear Calm - might help until antibiotics kick in, I find it really good for ear infections

Yes I am taking it when needed , currently 34 weeks with sinusitis and my consultant reconfirmed it was fine to take . I was also given some in labour with my 1st in the labour ward .

I was prescribed codeine in my first pregnancy and took everything I was prescribed. In my second pregnancy I took co codamol a good few times when I needed it. All fine.

Take it and get some rest , hope you feel better soon Thanks

I was given 60mg codeine in my last pregnancy after something awful happened with my back one day, it was absolutely agony I don’t even know what happened but my back kind of twinged a little then this sever pain came I couldn’t move!! The dr who gave me the codiene was also pregnant I said are you sure it’s safe??? She said yes definitely it’s only dangerous if you hammer them in the end of pregnancy and the baby can be born addicted but you have to take them solidly for 2 weeks for that to happen she said, rare cases 3 days but that’s very rare.
So yes you can take them for upto 3 days. You can take them more than 3 days if you have a break at some point inbetween.

But also please have a look up about the steamy cup on the ear, apparently takes the pain away instantly Iv heard.

Yes, the pain clinic at the hospital said I could for the worst SPD pain and migraines. Just said to avoid towards the end of pregnancy so the baby didn't have it in her system when she was born. The advice was the smallest dose that works for the shortest amount of time so I tended to just take it when the pain was bad enough it was stopping me sleeping.
