SAFE Nipt test

Wondered if anyone had decided to pay for this privately and whether as part of the results it also states the baby's sex if it's done privately or of this isn't part of the test? We're not eligible for it through the NHS because not judged high risk following 12 week scan but just wondering about the extra reassurance it would give (I'm 40). Our local hospital offers it on a private basis and I'd rather go with that than a private clinic if I could. Thanks

I had one with my 1st pregnancy, age 38. Also paid private. It wasn't 'SAFE' but this is just 1 of many brands/companies that do NIPT. Harmony, NIFTY, IONA are some others. Some things to ask about:

  • Where is the laboratory that will process the samples and what is the turn around time? Some companies still send samples to the USA. Turn around is longer, and there is the added risk of it going missing/customs delays etc
  • If not enough foetal DNA is collected, will the test be repeated? If so, how many times and is there a charge? If the test is done early (10 weeks) there is less foetal DNA and more chance it can't be detected. Also, having a higher BMI can cause this too. Occasionally, a repeat test cant detect it either
  • IF the results aren't good, what follow up is provided? I've heard of people going to a private clinic, being texted or emailed their results and not having any follow up or counselling and just told to find an abortion clinic!
  • Discuss with your partner what you'd each consider doing if the results weren't good. Its good to get clarity on each others thoughts.

In my case, I had the test at about 10 +5 and it unfortunately showed patau syndrome. My results came back in 3-4 days (not a US lab). I returned to the clinic for a more detailed scan. There were very obvious abnormalities visible- even at 11 weeks. We were offered waiting for CVS or amnio, but after discussion and seeing the scans myself, I had a termination 2 days later in hospital. The autopsy also confirmed the results.

Happy to answer any questions you might have.

I had the harmony test both pregnancies. First pregnancy I paid as I was high risk (think you can get it free now). Second pregnancy I booked it privately and had it before the 12 week scan so didn’t have nhs bloods. Best decision I ever made. My age meant I was probably going to be high risk. I had to tick a box each time to say I wanted to find out the sex. Which I did :)
Second time they did actually ask me why I wanted it - I think to check if I was just doing it for gender - I have known some people to do that. I explained I had been high risk before and was 38 so wanted reassurance. They were fine and I got a really nice scan as well at the private hospital with tons of pictures. High reccommend it!
