Cyclizine…how long does it take to work?

How long did it take Cyclizine to work for you? I’m suffering with extreme 24/7 nausea and wretching at almost 7 weeks pregnant ( had it for about a week now) and doctors have given me this.
I was hoping it would be pretty instant but apart from make me extra sleepy, I’m still feeling so sick after 2 doses.

For me it was pretty quick, a day or two. It might not be the drug for you. Don't be afraid to go back to the doctors and ask them to step it up if it isn't working.

With my first pregnancy - it didn't help at all but none of the tablets I was given did. I had HG and it was awful, I was vomiting 10+ times a day every day until 20 weeks when it then became more like 4/5 times a day.

I'm pregnant with my second now and have been taking cyclizine since about 7/8 weeks. It only took a few days to start helping - if I miss a day though I can barely move away from the toilet from being sick so often.
I will say though, they don't really help with my nausea, only the vomiting. I still feel incredibly sick a lot I'm just not being sick as often with taking them

Unfortunately cyclizine didn’t help my HG at all. I’m now on my 4th antiemetic called Xonvea and it’s calmed the vomiting down! I’m only being sick once or twice a day now!

If you don’t feel any different in 3 days then go back to the GP and get an alternative! Don’t give up. I’ll be ringing them again in 3 weeks when I’m 12 weeks to get some ondansetron as that’s meant to be quite effective :)

Thanks all it looks like it should be pretty quick then. The doctor only said to take 1 pill a day but I’m wondering if I need to take the full dosage of 3 for it to take affect?

My doctor told me to take up to three & to take them consistently (every 8 hours) for the best affect. Took a couple of days to kick in, made me sleeps at first and still felt nauseous sometime but they did stop me been sick! If they don’t worn after a couple of days ask for something else xx

Obviously I don’t want to go against medical advice, but 3 pills a day worked for me at that stage of pregnancy. I reduced that once I was passed 12 weeks. I would check with your GP what the reasoning is behind you only taking one a day, and whether you could up it. Fwiw it worked well for me and the sleepiness went after a few days. But a colleague of mine had to switch to something else as it totally wiped her out and she was exhausted and it didn’t go away.

A few days of taking it 3x a day. But it only stopped the vomiting, I still had constant nausea and felt generally rubbish. The only thing that stopped the nausea was odansetron but for some reason they wouldn’t prescribe it for me so I only had it as a one off on the few times I was admitted into hospital.

They didn't help me at all, and I tried a few others for DC1&2. Nothing!
I'm now pregnant again and I have only been sick once, but I literally have to eat every hour or so otherwise I feel horrendous.

It's so hard to eat when you feel nauseous, is there anything you fancy?
Lollipops helped me, and skips.

Hopefully it will be gone by 12 weeks, it really is awful.

The only thing I fancy meal wise is jacket potato and beans so I’ve been having that for lunch and tea the last few days. Breakfast I’ve been ok with toast and/or cereal and for snacks I’ve been having cereal bars, plain crackers and ginger biscuits. All pretty boring but I can’t stomach anything else! I’ve gone off cups of tea which isn’t like me when I’m used to 3 a day. I hate feeling like this!

I’ve been taking cyclizine 3x a day since I was 9weeks (now 24). I found it only works reducing the actual vomiting. I have HG so whilst it didn’t stop me being sick it did reduce the amount of times I would be sick a day to 1-2. I still feel nauseous every day, I’m 24wks & have been told I’m one of the unlucky ones who will probably feel like this until the baby is born.

Spottybutterfly · 05/03/2022 14:25

I tried it for 3 days, taking 3 a day. It didn't work at all. I'm now taking promethazine from about week 8. In the first 8 weeks I lost half a stone. In the next 8 I put on a stone.

I still felt sick and dizzy after week 8. But could actually eat, and some food on my stomach helped me feel less queasy. I was probably being sick about 2 times a day in the first trimester with the promethazine and had to lie on the sofa doing nothing.

But before the promethazine I had a couple of days where I just cried saying I couldn't do it, I felt so ill.

I started a phased return to work at week 16. I started with 4 hours a day. I haven't been sick for about 3 weeks but still feel queasy at about 2 most days.

Things I found helped were quavers and chocolate milk.
