Why do I pee myself when I’m being sick?

Almost 9 weeks pregnant, morning sickness is dreadful! When I vomit I also pee myself even if I have just been to the toilet. So I decided to buy a sick bucket so when I vomit I now sit on the toilet and be sick into my bucket. Each time I vomit pee also comes out even though I have just literally emptied my bladder it’s almost as if I have a different bladder and pee only comes out when I vomit.
I don’t get it! Is this happening to anyone else?? I didn’t use to pee myself when I was pregnant and sick with my first baby

Pelvic floor issues! I'm not even pregnant and this happens to me if I'm sick. I am doing lots of pelvic floor exercises to hopefully help.

Something about loosening ligaments I think.

Anyway, get use to it Grin will be part of life from now on. Every sneeze cough outrageous laugh , spontaneous dash...

And congratulations!

Happened to me all the time during my 2nd pregnancy. Totally normal. Hope your sickness passes soon, it's rotten. x

I was like this with DC2 - wish I'd thought of the bucket/loo combo. It's not fun Sad

Hope the sickness passes soon for you OP

In early stages of pregnancy the body releases a hormone called relaxin (I think it's spelt this way), which relaxes the smooth muscles and ligaments of the body in preparation for the pelvis to be able to widen for childbirth. Clever really when you think about it. Consequently things loosen up a bit and the sad thing is - they never really get back to where they were before. When you throw-up you increase your inter-abdominal pressure, also pushing down into the pelvis and on to the bladder and voila - a little bit of wee. Not sure what the current advice of when to start pelvic floor strengthening exercises - you certainly don't want them too tight yet!

Is this your first pregnancy? If so then it's from the increased hormones in the first trimester like PP has written. It should subside but can come back in later stage.

I feel your pain, I am pregnant for the third time (with twins) the absolute crazy amount of hormones coupled with the fact I wasn't particularly strict with doing my pelvic floor exercises means I am soaking my pad and pants and trousers after every vomiting session which is current 4-5 times per day. It is really awful.

Good luck OP

This happened to me with my first, after birth I went back to normal with pelvic floor exercises, I'm now 34 weeks pregnant with my second and it's come back with a Vengeance. I was being sick the other morning ( stomach lining) hadn't eaten yet, and due to increased heaving I generally thought my waters had broke! I had just been for a wee aswell 😩

SoOverThisCrap · 02/03/2022 21:28

Yep it happens to me too although I'm now 11 weeks and the severe vomiting is just starting to ease off, but every times I've been sick I've pee'd myself. Im currently using Cyclogest pessaries which are a bit messy so
I'm constantly wearing a sanitary towel, which kinda soaks up the pee 😂

During my first pregnancy, at about 6 months I had a rogue sneeze that took me by surprise and I pee'd myself. Not ideal as I'd gone for a walk whilst on my lunch break and didn't have a change of clothes. I don't drive so I couldn't even drive myself home and it's a 45 minute walk to my house from work so I had to phone DH hubby in tears and he bought round some spare clothes. It also didn't help that it was at the height of summer 😱🤦‍♀️ the joys of pregnancy, eh?

This time around I'm working from home so I haven't had the stress of throwing up and peeing myself at work.

myyellowcar · 02/03/2022 21:32

It’ll get better once you are post partum and all recovered as long as you keep up with your pelvic floor exercises.

I got norovirus four months after a massive episiotomy and forceps delivery and I shit myself while being sick. Am now happy to report that doesn’t happen anymore!

cherrytreecottage · 02/03/2022 21:38

Omg happened to me too. I was being sick 3/4 x a day for weeks and every bloody time It would happen even if I'd just been for a wee! Genuinely started to worry thinking it didn't bode well for after I'd had the baby (and this is my first!!)
Luckily I'm past it now but really wish I'd thought of the bucket thing!!

Theresamagicalplace · 02/03/2022 21:40

Ah this happened to me for the first few months of this pregnancy too! I'm now 14 weeks and no longer peeing when retching or throwing up! It does get better! I went through a phase of wearing sanitary towels just incase (while working long hours, really didn't want to risk that). Congratulations it'll all be worth it in the end.

Natsku · 02/03/2022 21:41

I found crossing my legs tightly when I vomited helped prevent it (had HG, vomited the whole pregnancy so got a lot of experience in preventing accidents!)

Do your pelvic floor exercises!

Lemongrass9 · 02/03/2022 22:46

This happened to me during pregnancy and was actually much better towards end of second trimester when I stopped being sick so much.
I was really regular at doing my pelvic floor exercises in pregnancy did 2-3times a day with the nhs Squeezy app but my baby is now six months old and I’ve been pretty lax with the pelvic floors, probably do about 2-3times a week now and have never had any leaks when coughing/sneezing/laughing etc. not to say don’t do pelvic floors post-birth, I keep thinking I should do them more often, just wanted to say it’s not always forever and it does get better!

Thanks everyone yup the toilet and bucket are a great idea lol I also turn the tap on so DP can’t hear the vomiting coughing chocking and peeing all at once lol
