Is decaffeinated tea ok during pregnancy?

Hi, I drink a lot of tea. Last month I switched to decaf just incase we were lucky when ttc. I’ve just had a positive test, so now I’m wondering if I need to be even more careful and stop tea altogether? Online it says 200mg per day is the limit.

I wondered if anyone further along is drinking tea and if it’s all ok? I might be worrying for nothing.

It’s absolutely fine!

It’s fine. I had a huge coffee and tea habit and switched to mostly decaf during pregnancy. The weekly treat of a fully caffeinated one was saved for when I was properly exhausted.

Keep an eye on chocolate and fizzy drink consumption as they have caffeine too.

@Flangeosaurus thanks that’s good to hear. I might limit how much I have, but keep drinking it.

I drank weak caffeinated tea all the way through both my pregnancies

I couldn’t stomach tea or coffee whilst pregnant, and I'm normally a "tea is life" person. So you may find the decision is made for you.

Yes

TheBirdintheCave · 01/03/2022 09:45

@SusannaQueen Same. I went right off tea with my son and haven't had a cup since finding out about this one last week.

It's fine! 200 mg a day is actually quite a lot if I remember correctly, something like two teas, one large coffee or three coke cans a day, so I think you'd have to drink quite a lot of decaf tea for any residual caffeine to cause an issue.

Don't worry too much about chocolate. Of you were eating enough chocolate for the caffeine to be a problem you'd already be having major issues with sugar and fat!

ShadowPuppets · 01/03/2022 10:30

Absolutely fine, I drink decaf diet coke and decaf tea when pregnant. The only time I ever have a caffeinated drink is when I'm out and about as a treat and in places where I can't get decaf. Was all fine with DD and now 29 weeks with DS with no problems.

Just keep an eye on herbal teas, I always seem to forget that they have caffeine in despite being them being herbal!

Danikm151 · 01/03/2022 10:54

I treated myself to 1 caffeine tea a in the morning for my wake up and then decaff the rest of the day.
I did have a craving for pepsi max so probably had more caffeine than I should have but limited myself!

ukborn · 01/03/2022 11:33

I went off yea too! But I love my coffee and had full caffeine but only one or two cups. Don't stress do much about it (memories of a friend practically leaping across the table to try and stop me eating a peanut - I ate it and more snd no issues).
I think alcohol and some unpasteurised foods are really the only thing I stopped eating, even then I met a bunch of french women at a work do and they looked at me like I had three heads when I asked what food restrictions was recommended there.

Even caffeinated tea is fine during pregnancy up to 200mg which is a few cups.
Pre pregnancy, I used to only have a cup of tea maybe once a week since I'm quite sensitive to caffeine but I was so unbelievably exhausted during my pregnancy that I ended up having a cup of tea nearly every day that I was in the office. I was driving and was more afraid of falling asleep at the wheel than the 'damage' of a cup of tea.

The only thing with tea is it can make you iron deficient so don’t drink too much around meals (as it stops iron absorption).

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 01/03/2022 13:06

It's fine! I drank regular tea (1 cup in the morning) during all my pregnancies.

Doublechins · 01/03/2022 13:12

It is but tannin in tea can limit iron absorption so avoid if anaemic
