I have a 5 week 2 day scan today. As I've had MC in the past. What would you normally expect to see ?? Thanks. X

I had a scan at 5+4. We saw the gestational sac and yolk sac, and a little thickening on one side of the yolk sac which was the beginning of the embryo. It was too early to see a heartbeat.

scornrufibarbis · 25/02/2022 10:00

Usually at tht stage all you’ll really see of the yolk sac and gestational sack.

I’ve always seen a heartbeat from about 6 weeks but advice is to wait until 7/8
For more of a chance if that’s what you’re hoping for. My epu only offer early scans after 3 miscarriages and make you wait until the 7/8 week mark for that reason. Which is tough Sad

SunnySideUp2020 · 25/02/2022 10:08

Gestational sac and yolk sac I think...
Unless you are a bit ahead then a fetal pole?
But could also just be a Gestational sac if you are a bit behind.

I personally wouldn't recommend such an early scan. The results are always inconclusive in terms of viability and create more stress...

SunnySideUp2020 · 25/02/2022 10:09

Just saw your scan is today, then hope it goes well but try not to worry if you don't see much!

thunderonlyhappenswhenits · 25/02/2022 10:24

I had one at 5+5 and only saw the gestational sac and yolk sac. The wait for rescan was horrendous. After a lot of googling it's normal to only see that at that stage, but there was some ladies that did see a fetal pole and heartbeat

dairymilkbuttons · 25/02/2022 10:53

Thanks all. I got a BFP literally 4 DP0 so I might be a bit further on anyway. We shall see !!!! Xx

babyjellyfish · 25/02/2022 13:07

It's not possible to get a BFP at 4DPO so I suspect you ovulated at least 5 days before you think you did.

Hopefully that means you're further along than you think.

Fingers crossed!

dairymilkbuttons · 25/02/2022 14:39

She only saw a gestational sac is that normal?? Nothing in it yet.

babyjellyfish · 25/02/2022 15:10

What kind of scan did you have? Abdominal or vaginal?

dairymilkbuttons · 25/02/2022 15:12

Vaginal x

It's still very early. Do you have a follow up scan planned?

Rachae · 25/02/2022 15:40

I think normal to see just sac at 5+2... We saw yolk at 5+4 and fetal pole with HB at 6+2 . Can't recommend private scans enough as I really don't understand why they make you wait 2 weeks with NHS. Especially as you can see 1mm of growth every day with the embryo xx

dairymilkbuttons · 25/02/2022 17:32

I haven't got a follow up scan booked and Walked out after waiting two hours for a blood test. I don't know what to do now 😣

dairymilkbuttons · 25/02/2022 18:33

So I just had a call from the EPU and have booked bloods for tomorrow. She basically said she could see the gestsational sac but that's it. She said you could be a week behind what I thought I was. She isn't alllowee to call it a pregnancy sac till bloods are back. What sac is it then if it's not a pregnancy one in my uterus?!?!? The whole process is ridiculous. Now I'm a shivering mess that it's just a sac and won't ever progress past it.

Jupiter92 · 25/02/2022 18:35

It’s very early OP, I wouldn’t worry too much. Maybe call them tomorrow and explain and ask if they will rescan you in 2 weeks time.
If not, book a private scan for 7 weeks as you should be able to see a heartbeat then. Xxx

Jupiter92 · 25/02/2022 18:36

Sorry I’ve just seen your second post, I would ask for a rescan in 2 weeks but don’t panic until then xx

snowdropsanddaffodils · 25/02/2022 18:42

The whole process is ridiculous.

Sorry OP that you haven't got answers - but not sure who advised you to get a scan this early. 99% of EPUs refuse to scan at less than 6 weeks for this very reason that hardly anything can be seen at less than this point and it tells them nothing about whether the pregnancy is viable and just causes unnecessary stress and ties up resources - even though I nearly died from 2 ectopics I was still refused scans at less than 6 weeks.

(Also agree with others it's biologically/medically impossible to get a BFP at 4dpo - it takes 5 days minimum for a fertilised egg to become a blastocyst and hatch before it can then even start to implant and produce hcg)

If you can't wait 2 weeks I would try and get a private scan at 6 weeks

dairymilkbuttons · 25/02/2022 19:31

@snowdropsanddaffodils whixh makes me stressed that I should be further along as I got the positive so early. I went into the scan thinking I'd be 6 weeks not 5. But she said I could only be about 4/5. So what am i supposed to make of that.

I had an early scan because I've had 2 MC recently.

@dairymilkbuttons

If you had a proper positive pregnancy test so long ago then unfortunately it sounds like the pregnancy isn't progressing as it should.
It happened to me before and ended in a MC at 7w.

But either way you will need to wait a week at least to monitor for progress... if they agree to do repeat bloods it will also be a good indicator of how it's going.

It is the hardest part to be waiting and not knowing but that's the problem with such early scans. You have my sympathy. Been there and I was a mess...

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 25/02/2022 21:16

With my 3rd child I had a scan at what should have been 7 weeks and they dated me 5, with just a gestational sac visible, I was a wreck until my dating scan and convinced that it was over and I was just going to get bad news. By my dating scan it had caught up by a week so only 1 week behind my dates rather than 2. When I gave birth he was so so dry, every midwife I saw asked how late he was by the dating scan he was 40+1 when born but by my dates he was 41+1which correlated with how dry he was.
Call the EPAU on Monday and ask for a repeat scan in 2 weeks even if only for your mental health's sake x

dairymilkbuttons · 25/02/2022 21:36

@Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily Thankyou! I've just booked a private scan when I should be 7weeks so will see what's what then. All positive stories welcome xx
