Anyone got pregnant after having ruptured appendix?

Hi all

I’m usually posting in conception board as I’m still TTC.

I wonder if any of you lovely ladies managed to conceive after having an open appendectomy?

I’ve recently found out that having any surgery on your abdomen can cause adhesions of your uterus and tubes, and having ruptured appendicitis (which is what I had) and open surgery to remove it makes you high risk for blocked Fallopian tubes …

Now I’m worried sick that the surgery I’ve had 11 years ago can affect my fertility and I won’t be able to conceive without a surgery.

I’m just looking for some reassurance/ success stories.

Thank you 💐

I have never heard that, and no doctor or consult has ever told me that! I know lots of people that had appendectomies and babies, myself one! How long have you been ttc?

3peassuit · 24/02/2022 17:08

I’ve never heard that either. I had 2 children a few years after surgery. No complications.

@Mummytobe93 Me! I had a ruptured appendix, which then caused a large bowel obstruction, DVT and pulmonary embolisms when I was 20 years old.

I starting TTC just over 2 years ago and am now 19 weeks pregnant (with the help of Clomid, trigger shot, progesterone, Clexane, and aspirin - but I also have PCOS and don't ovulate naturally).

I had a ruptured appendix and septicaemia afterwards when the surgeon accidentally left a load of guaze inside me that started rotting 17 years ago. I have an absolutely huge scar and for about 18 months afterwards there was a possibility of having a bit of my intestine removed as it was so badly damaged. I have a 9yo and a 6yo and the only time my appendectomy was mentioned was to say that the surgeon would need to be aware if I needed a c section. I haven’t ever heard of it affecting fertility in normal circumstances.

Did your surgery touch your womb/ tubes/ cervix/ vagina at all or result in scar tissue there? Is that why your surgeon was concerned about fertility.

Surgical nurse here. I've honestly never heard of an appendicectomy ever creating infertility. Usually adhesions come from quite big ops but even then, anatomically your gynae bits would be very unlucky to be affected by adhesions from an appendicectomy.

Hi, i had a raptured appendix then got septicaemia 6 weeks after having my daughter by c section (Had a previous section before this as well). Went on to have a completely healthy pregnancy and baby 4 years later. Wish you all the best 🌷

Thank you lovely ladies💐

I’ve been TTC for 5 months, so not long at all but I can’t help but start to get impatient so I’ve decided to self - diagnose with the help of Dr Google 😳🙈

I just turned 18 when I had a typical case of appendicitis going wrong, doctors didn’t pick it up until few days had passed, was nearly septic when finally got diagnosed and had surgery the same day. I had to walk around with a drain tube sticking out of my belly for a few days, it was horrible! I’m assuming it was only inches away from my right ovary, based on where the scar is.

It just something I came across on the Internet so I wanted to check with you if it’s something common. Clearly not!

I will mention it to my GP though if I’m still unsuccessful in a few months time.

Thank you for your replies and I hope and pray I’ll soon join the pregnancy board 🤞

I had a ruptured appendix in 2017. I've been pregnant 4 times since then. I did have 3 losses including an ectopic but I'm now 14 weeks.

PossiblyDreaming · 24/02/2022 21:38

Good luck OP. I know it’s hard but try and stay away from Dr Google. I don’t think I’ve ever googled any symptoms and not come away thinking I’m minutes from death.

SaraKitty · 25/02/2022 20:18

I know someone who this happened to and they had to get IVF . But she knew from when she had had the appendix operation when she was younger that they had severed some tubes etc. so if there was nothing communicated to you there should be nothing to worry about

dipdye · 25/02/2022 20:19

Bit of a reverse situation but I manged to have my appendix removed during my cesarean? It was on the point of exploding apparently

IsabelHerna · 28/02/2022 07:13

I've never heard that. I've heard about a lot of factors that can affect fertility, but never a case about this. I would recommend asking your gp

Hi there,
just checking in to see if you have any further updates as I’m in the exact same situation as you?
