Hi I was just wondering if anyone has the same issue as me with low platelets I've been told not to worry about it as my bloods are getting checked every 3 weeks but it's hard not too especially when you ask google and it always tells you the worst that can happen.

I had this. It is common in pregnancy. They monitored me and came up with a plan near the end to check my levels on the day as I ended up needing a csection. It was all fine they just needed to have the different scenarios on standby.

Hi @sugarcandcoffee thank you for your reply I'm just a bag of nerves thinking about it because all you read is what happens if things go wrong.

My platelets drop massively when I'm pregnant.
The risk is haemorrhage but if they know you have low platelets then they put a cannula in and have blood on standby.
I only needed it on my first labour, even though in my last pregnancy my platelets went right down to 13 at the end.
Another thing that may happen if they drop below 100 is that you aren't allowed pain relief except gas and air due to the bleeding risk.

@Dee2349 how far into your pregnancy are you? 87 is low, but not drastically so. They start to worry when it's below 20. Platelets aren't the only clotting mechanism in your body. My middle child had a liver transplant while his platelets were only 6 and he's still here. Honestly, low platelets are easily dealt with by obstetricians.

The haemorrhage was stemmed quite quickly. They inject you immediately after the birth with a drug to help with clotting and they are obviously aware that episiotomy is not good for people like us. I was told if the baby got stuck I would have an emergency cesarean as its safer.

@ofwarren I'm 23 weeks my level was 89 when I had my 20 week scan they said my levels havent been high before I was pregnant.

How did this turn put? Currently 35 weeks platelets are 96. My midwife doesn't seem worried, but I cant help having a hit of a panic over it ☹️

Out bit stupid autocorrect

I had low platelets at 30 weeks, I had pre-eclampsia too so I was given a platelet infusion (intravenous) just before caesarean section. I'd been in hospital for a few weeks already so my veins were a bit rubbish from the multiple blood tests I'd had already.

They had a problem siteing the canula (?) sucessfully, had to try several times, started the infusion and realised it had missed the vein and then had to remove it and start again at a new site.

Apart from the massive bruise that the wrongly placed canula caused it was all fine and my caesarean went ahead shortly after also with no problems.

Hi everyone I had no problems what so ever my little girl was born 3/6/22 3 weeks early 5lb 15oz they just kept a check on them and the doctor still is making sure they go bk up but never dropped below 80 which would have been a worry good luck too you all when your time comes.
