EPU machine vs Ultrasound department machine

Anyone else found the quality of the EPU's ultrasound machine worse than the ones used in the actual ultrasound department? Haha

Just seems they alway struggle to get a good view and when they show you it's just a white grainy picture 😂

Surely it's the same machine but in the EPU the baby is much smaller and harder to see

Goldenbunny · 22/02/2022 13:50

In our hospital the epu takes you over to the ultrasound department for scan so use the same machine has when we have our ultrasound.

Exactly this!

@Carebear99 I'm not sure for other hospitals but the one in our EPU is very old looking, like the white boxy ones whereas the ones in the ultrasound department are flat screens and smart looking controls haha

Oh OK, I have my 12 week scan on Friday but the EPU machine looked like a normal ultrasound machine

EllieJai44 · 22/02/2022 14:16

@Carebear99 it may well have been at your hospital! Suppose it depends how up to date with equipment your hospital is lol

how 'old looking' a machine is doesn't tell you masses. The naffest looking ultrasound machine in our anaesthetics department is the one all our ultrasound experts prefer for doing nerve blocks (rather than the sexy looking one with a massive flat-screen and only two knobs to twiddle that those of us who're a bit short sighted prefer!).

Tonsiltrouble · 22/02/2022 15:29

In the EPU they are mostly doing transvaginal scans to look for early stage pregnancy. It may well be that the machine in there is better suited/easier to use for early pregnancy. Just because something looks newer and shinier doesn’t mean it’s better.

@Tonsiltrouble in comparison to a scan I had today at 11 and half weeks with the EPU and in previous pregnancies at 12 weeks in our usual ultrasound department the quality was so much different!
