Am I being dramatic over pepperoni?

So I’m 15 weeks and have had the odd pepperoni pizza and I’m fine about it because it’s cooked to within an inch of it’s life.

BUT, I went for a Pizziola sub at Subway because all I could think of was the deliciousness and completely forgot about the pepperoni in it not being frazzled (just toasted!) but at this point, had completely wolfed it down.

Am I being crazy thinking I’ve now contracted Toxo/Listeria? Will avoid from now on (bar on a pizza!), but any thoughts?

Did you eat anything on the ‘cautious/avoid’ list and didn’t contract anything? All this food stuff is driving me mad - I don’t eat pate anyway, don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t eat any fish/shellfish because it’s just not for me and now I’m having a thrombie over eight slices of pepperoni 🙃

I was not even aware you couldn't eat pepperoni. I'm sure you'll be fine, not much you can do now anyway. I have learnt something new today!

CountryGirl189 · 16/02/2022 18:29

@Carebear99 - it just says on NHS to be cautious unless it’s cooked thoroughly and then it’s all good!

Subway meats are already cooked, they just get reheated if you have a toasted one.

Random789 · 16/02/2022 18:38

It's fine, really REALLY fine. I rmember how awful it was, to be so anxious about anything that entered your body while you are pregnant. But ithe anxiety really is a product of how HUGELY much you are invested inyour dear little soon-to-be-baby, and not a reflection of the actual risks.

I always think about it like this: 'how often did I get listeria from eating pepperoni or Brie before I was pregnant.... never'! And I've eaten a lot of it in my life! The risk is so small in this country. I don't think pepperoni at subway starts of raw anyway, I think it's cooked and then they warm it up. I can't imagine them having raw pepperoni. It will come cooked in big frozen bags i assume x

FTEngineerM · 16/02/2022 18:45

How often have you got listeria from pepperoni before?

Galaxyrippleforever · 16/02/2022 18:45

Pepperoni at Subway comes delivered in frozen tubs and is already cooked and safe to eat. That's why you can have it cold on the sandwich ☺️

FTEngineerM · 16/02/2022 18:46

@miltonj pepperoni is spiced raw meat, raw in the sense it isn’t cooked with heat but fermented with lactic acid.

Thank you @Random789 - I keep telling myself it’s fine but my mind goes into overdrive, I’m running myself up the wall! 🙄

Have eaten salami whole of this pregnancy and all ok, so dont worry... got such food pgobia from first pregnancy that i decided not to follow anything with second...

I have had more or less everything from the NHS avoid list except pate (don't drink/smoke anyway) and we are fine. I have had insane sushi cravings which I have limited a bit to avoid too much fish. I would be more concerned about things like a greasy takeaway for both bacteria and nutrients but NHS has no issue with it. Easier said than done but try not to stress too much.
Also congratulations!

ElliotGoss · 17/02/2022 08:38

I would be interested to know how many people have listeria each year. And then how many of them are pregnant.

CountryGirl189 · 17/02/2022 11:54

Just to clarify, I’m less concerned about Listeria as it’s so rare and more so concerned about Toxoplasmosis @ElliotGoss

gogohm · 17/02/2022 12:13

Had no idea you were meant to avoid it. Listeria from poorly stored sliced meats (eg ham opened a few days ago) is a tiny risk unlikely to be an issue in a busy commercial kitchen because everything is used up quickly. Toxoplasmosis, didn't even know it could be in meat - cat poo yes though!

Try to make sensible choices but don't get too obsessed with good / bad because the list changes frequently eg I was told absolutely no nuts.
