Low placenta at 20 week scan

Hi all,

I was just after experiences of those who had a low lying placenta at their 20 week scan.

I had my scan last week, baby is looking great which was a big relief, but they said my placenta was low and close to my cervix - I’m booked in for a 34 week scan to check, and hopefully it’s moved. I read that in most cases it does, if anyone on here has it did it move?

X

I've had it with 3 of my pregnancies and it's moved by 30 weeks every time.

StarlessSea123 · 16/02/2022 21:05

Yes I had the same, had a scan later and it had moved right up. I have a couple of friends who also had the same experience.

Yes, I had this, along with a few bleeding episodes in my second trimester, and it moved in time. The obstetrician assured me that the gap will only ever get bigger, not smaller, and 90% of women find it does move.

Ah great! Thank you - that’s reassuring to know ! It does seem like it moves in most cases from what I’ve heard.

I had this in both my pregnancies, and both times it moved out of the way.

It was described to me like putting a dot near the neck of a balloon, and then blowing it up. As the balloon inflates, the dot moves further from the neck.

Garman · 16/02/2022 21:47

I had it and it didn't move.

Shadappayourface · 16/02/2022 21:49

I know somebody who had one and by their 34 week scan it had moved!

Somerandomgirl · 16/02/2022 21:55

Mine moved by 26 weeks even

KingOlive · 16/02/2022 22:09

I have placenta previa at the moment. Currently 31w pregnant and having another scan at 34 weeks. I had a couple of bleeds in the second trimester which I was sort of expecting given the diagnosis but fortunately seems to have stopped the past few weeks. I know the placenta hasn’t shifted yet as had a private scan last week but as said here already it normally does move out of the way. So good luck and fingers crossed for you xx

Mine was low at the 20 week scan and had moved up by the 34 week one. I was told most of them do so yours is very likely to.

Gamechanger2019 · 16/02/2022 22:19

I had front low lying at 20 weeks and just had 32 week scan and it’s moved up but obviously still at the front

Pleasejustdropit · 16/02/2022 22:19

Mine moved up by 36 week scan- having a section anyway but was good to know in case baby came along early and fast

Youkilledmyfatherpreparetodie · 16/02/2022 22:21

Everyone told me it would move. It didn't! Csection at 38 weeks for me, all absolutely fine 🙂.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 16/02/2022 22:22

Mine was low and didn't move (80-90% do). Had a couple of extra scans but didn't have any bleeding or other problems. Had a planned section at 39+2.

amc8583 · 16/02/2022 22:24

I was told at my 20 week scan my placenta is low and like other posters have had a bleed as a result. A little unnerving but I'm fine. I have a 35 week scan booked and hoping it will have moved up. Fingers crossed x

siobhan2017 · 17/02/2022 10:25

I had some early bleeds actually - I’m now wondering if it was due to the low placenta perhaps - but touch wood - nothing since about 14 weeks. Thanks for all of your comments … it does seem like it moves in most cases, but if not, it’s not the end of the world!
