Cyclizine

My GP has given me cyclizine after I spent 3 days in bed sobbing feeling so sick I could barely sit up or sip water (only 6 weeks pg)!

These pills are amazing, I was actually able to get up, shower and go to work today. I still felt unwell but it was much more manageable.

Something I’m unsure about is whether it’s actually considered alright to take 2 to 3 tablets a day. The doctor didn’t give any instruction and the packet says 3 max.

However when I collected them from the pharmacy the woman behind the counter looked very unhappy giving them to me and said in a disapproving tone ‘you mustn’t take these every day, only when absolutely necessary’.

I think her suggestion was they were dangerous for the baby if taken too much. Are they? I’ve not seen anything about them being unsafe so wonder if she is misinformed. Or does she just want me to be miserable? I appreciated any thoughts.

My guess is she's advising to only take them when absolutely necessary because no one can be absolutely 100% sure it's safe in pregnancy. That goes for all drugs because they're not tested on pregnant women

rolypolydoly · 15/02/2022 22:20

I very much doubt she wants you to be miserable

I took them throughout my first pregnancy. Like others have said, they can't be tested on pregnant women but they were the only tbjbjfs that work for me so I used them. Granted, if I didn't feel I needed it then I just didn't take it.

Iv been extremely sickly too I’m 6+4 today and I was waking up very early like 2-3am and my morning sickness was coming along like 20mins later and Iv been just so poorly with it and so exhausted so my doctor too gave me cyclizine and said 3 per day, one every 8 hours when I need too and for the shortest time possible but she gave me a bottle of 84 tablets so that is like a months worth so I also bought some sea bands and what a difference!!! I’m not joking I was only sick once last night I did have a cyclizine in the morning just 1 and had my sea bands on all day they were £10 from boots. This morning Iv even managed my cuppa and I haven’t had a cuppa for 6 days!

@Nikki037297 thanks for your reply, I do have sea bands but they haven’t made a different (they just make my hands numb)

I had them from 12 weeks till around 20 weeks. Just took one when I felt really sick and had them in my bag just in case. Never took more than 2 a day.
It’s because most pills aren’t tested on pregnant women so they can’t be 100% sure.

@Nikki037297 glad you’re feeling better!!! I feel very unfortunate having bad sickness so early on.

I took them throughout my first pregnancy. They literally saved my life. DC1 is fine and healthy if a bit wacky...

I never took more than 2 a day - I wasn't sick in my sleep otherwise I would have taken 3. The woman at the pharmacy refused to give them to me and made a big show of phoning the GP to make sure I was OK to take them Hmm A lot of people assume there is a blanket ban on medication during pregnancy and I imagine they think they are doing the right thing by stopping you from taking the pills. People who haven't experienced HG have no idea how serious it is or that it can be life-threatening if untreated. It still made me feel like shit on top of how poorly I was so I understand OP Flowers

*I mean the whole drama at the chemists made me feel like shit

My gp's words were- these are very safe in pregnancy you don't have to worry. Same said by doctor at EPAU.

Glad they work for you- they made me be sick more.

Wisemensay · 16/02/2022 22:07

I've been taking them every day for 4 weeks - 12 week scan today was perfect. Took them all through my first pregnancy and baby was absolutely fine. Cyclizine is very routinely used in pregnancy.

My daughter was prescribed this a few weeks ago because of severe sickness. She is taking 3 a day.

She was still being sick/nauseous/not hungry and ended up in hospital today due to dehydration.

She found out that she's expecting twins.
