Dog stepped on 6 week old baby - help

Tonight 6 week old baby was in dock a tot on couch. My 22 lb dog didn’t see her & jumped up - her paws went on her stomach but she realised quickly & straight off. Baby was sleeping & didn’t notice / react at all so wasn’t hurt but I’m now paranoid that she could have internal damage.. husband says I’m being crazy but so worried

I doubt she’d have done any damage. The baby didn’t even wake up.

Weaselstoatferret · 11/02/2022 21:52

I would take her to get checked out.

NiceTwin · 11/02/2022 21:53

If she had internal damage, I'm guessing she would be in distress.

FennecShandDoesEverything · 11/02/2022 21:55

The baby literally didn't even wake up. If she had felt any pain, she'd have been screaming her head off ever since.

Your baby is fine.

pinksquash13 · 11/02/2022 21:57

Baby very likely fine if didn't wake.

Somerandomgirl · 11/02/2022 21:59

Oh god..never leave baby where dog can get to it xx theyre not very gentle by nature xx even with just tail smacking and knocking everything 🙂
I would have been worried also if on your place, maybe take baby to be seen, highly doubt anything happened but for peace of mind x

DistrictCommissioner · 11/02/2022 22:04

The baby didn’t react? Everything is fine.

harbourlane · 11/02/2022 22:07

You should get the baby checked out. And don't allow it to happen again.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 11/02/2022 22:13

I don’t know what a dock a tot is but if your baby didn’t wake and has been undistressed since then I wouldn’t worry.

Lesson learned though, young children should never be left unattended with dogs.

Katjolo · 11/02/2022 22:15

Get baby checked.

TeaRex49 · 11/02/2022 22:18

I’d get the baby checked. Chances are the dog realised whilst landing at didn’t put full weight on, especially as baby didn’t wake up. But I’d still get the baby checked just to be safe, or atleast phone 111 incase they can talk you through checking the baby over. Are there any marks on the babies belly?

TheSunIsStillShining · 11/02/2022 23:03

This dog is just a tad bit heavier than our giant cat, so I can compare from first hand experience.
I would never freak out over that. Babies are squishy for a basic evolutionary reason: to best survive even harsher environments/circumstances. She didn't even wake up, or cried then or since. don't fuss over it.

Or if you are really interested if this could have caused harm: use basic physics knowledge to calculate the amount of pressure your dog's paw could potentially have applied (range based on time interval of paw touching baby) and then find a reference point.

Alternatively simulate same situation and ask dog to jump on your stomach than cca half? the pressure applied by his paw (because he realised and took it off baby, whilst he jumped directly on you and didn't jump off) and the feeling you had.

One more alternative: try looking at cartoons depicting the difference between first and n-th time mums. They are hilarious eye openers on how much fuss we do with our firstborn and how silly some if it is :)

If the baby didn’t wake up and isn’t crying in pain or seam distressed what so ever, is feeding well, filling it’s nappies well, waking and sleeping well, I’d not worry.

You know your baby better than anyone. Do what you think is best.

Regenbogen22 · 21/05/2022 15:45

@SunshineCake the thread is from February

SunshineCake · 21/05/2022 15:56

Irrelevant @Regenbogen22 as it still had a horrible photo that needed deleting.

Regenbogen22 · 21/05/2022 16:01

Which was reported and deleted. 👍

wpse · 21/05/2022 16:03

This is why you need to separate dogs and small children. Learn from this.
Undoubtedly the dog fanatics will come to your defence but your baby could have been seriously injured.
