Contractions (I think) and not dilating - help!

Hi All,

I wanted to know peoples experience on dilating and contractions in early labor. As some background I’m a first time mum to be and I’ve been having pains for 2 days now, they feel like strong period pains/dodgy tummy, but at the same time my stomach goes really hard and feels like it’s getting so hard it could literally burst. They went from once every 10 mins lasting 30-40 seconds each, to once every 5 minutes lasting 30-40 seconds each, and were consistent from 6pm last night to 3am this morning (typically they stopped when I arrived at the hospital to grab some pain relief and get checked over) I believed these were contractions but my midwife said they must just be braxton hicks as I have not dialated at all (I’m 40 + 1 today). I’ve also lost my mucus plug 2 days ago.

Does this sound like contractions to you? and is this common to not dilate along side them? I feel awful that I felt like I was getting somewhere with early labor to be told it’s not even started, it’s so disheartening as I was so motivated by the pains building up that the end was near.

I woke up this morning with the same pains but they are spread abit further a part, more like once every 10 minutes again..

Any stories/suggestions welcome please!! Xx

All labours and births are completely different, it could be BH or it could be your body gearing up for birth.

If you can try and get bouncing on a birthing ball/walking and also getting some rest ready for the main event
