Bleeding after internal ultrasound?

Moonshine160 · 10/02/2022 13:29

I went for an ultrasound today, about 3 hours ago, because I’d had cramping and some pink spotting. I measured bang on for my dates and there was a heartbeat. The pink spotting has now turned to red fresh blood, not loads of it but there when I wipe. Is this just from the ultrasound? It was really uncomfortable and sore at the time. Has anyone else had bleeding after this??

How many weeks are you?

Moonshine160 · 10/02/2022 13:56

I was measured at 7+4 earlier.
I just phoned the assessment unit and asked if it’s normal after a transvaginal scan. She said it doesn’t sound worrying but to monitor it.
The reason I went was for pink spotting and pain but I’m now really worried it’s turned to red :( it was really uncomfortable and sore at the time though.

Tricky to say and I'm sorry you're going through this worry. I'm 15 weeks and have only had internal scans, 4 of them, and no bleeding or irritation afterwards. I think if you went it with spotting/bleeding and cramping, and the bleeding has got worse, it may be another cause, unfortunately.
Or one thing has nothing to do with the other! I had an early miscarriage last summer and the waiting to see what happened was horrible.

Unfortunately it’s got worse, bright red blood dripping out. I’ve rang EPU back who told me to monitor it and there’s no point scanning me for a couple of days. I am terrified. There was a perfect heartbeat just this morning, how can this be happening?

I had this after every internal scan during and after pregnancy. Baby was fine. Apparently my cervix was easily irritated.

Moonshine160 · 10/02/2022 15:52

@Footnote was there lots of fresh red blood? That’s what I’m getting right now x

Yes, loads, plus huge clots. You can’t know either way unfortunately.

Moonshine160 · 10/02/2022 16:41

@Footnote that does reassure me as most of what I’ve read just says light spotting whereas this was dripping at one point. No clots though. I’ll try and stay positive but it’s difficult

Just had a small clot :(

At the time I was having this issue there was a woman on here who had had to change pads hourly and still had the baby. First trimester bleeding is a mystery.

One hears a lot about subchorionic haematomas which cause red bleeding but don't affect the pregnancy. I have no idea if an internal scan could have caused one to start bleeding.Hmm

HarryPotterGeek84 · 10/02/2022 20:21

I had this after an internal scan last Thursday; similar to you I had an early scan due to spotting / bleeding and it got worse after the scan for the rest of Thursday and Friday, also passing a couple of thumb sized clots. On my scan they could see I have a subchronic haematoma and I’m keeping everything crossed it’s just been that. I’ve continued to spot since Friday, but it’s generally been very light and only when I wipe.

I have my follow-up appointment tomorrow and just praying everything is still ok but they did say to me last week it was 50 / 50. It’s been an agonising week that’s for sure.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Moonshine160 · 10/02/2022 20:40

@HarryPotterGeek84 thanks for that, it’s good to know I’m not alone. I have everything crossed for you too. I bet it is your haematoma. I’ve read so many times on here that when people have had a bleed that’s what it is. I did ask during my scan if they could see any cause of spotting and they said no so I’m pretty sure that’s not the case with me. I’m just hoping that it’s just really irritated my cervix and made it bleed. My bleeding has slowed a bit now but I’ve still got cramps.

OP I had an absolutely massive bleed on my first child and she is nine now. No particular reason they could give for it happening. Best of luck

@Moonshine160 im so sorry to send this almost 3 years later…but how did this turn out for you? Having the exact same thing right now xx

Moonshine160 · 08/01/2025 19:38

@pregnancydiaries my little boy is now 2 :) I think the bleeding was coming from the cervix because it had been prodded and irritated it. I did have spotting that went on until 19 weeks and there was no obvious cause on the scan so was told it must be from my cervix. In fact, after an internal examination during the the very early stages of labour it also caused quite a big bleed again. It doesn’t always mean the worst. Wishing you lots of luck x

@Moonshine160 thank you so much for replying and congratulations on your wee boy! I also have a 2.5 year old so kudos for finding the time to reply to such an old post in amongst this crazy toddler life!

It's really reassuring to hear you had a successful outcome and praying for the same. I've had a few miscarriages and this is different to anything I've experienced with them but then they were all different too so who knows! Doesn't help EPU are being useless and won't scan me! Thanks again, you've given me some reassurance to hopefully get some sleep xxx

Moonshine160 · 08/01/2025 19:54

No problem. Let me know how you get on @pregnancydiaries xx
