Don't know about a cream that hardens them that you use in advance, but during breastfeeding found Lansanol (think that's how you spell it) invaluable as it really helps soothe sore nipples and is perfectly safe for baby. A bit pricey at aboutn £10 per tube, but well worth it. In a purple tube from all good chemists. x.

ROFL - you don't need anything! But I think she's probably thinking of something like Kamillosan - but that would soften them, not harden them up. I've heard all sorts of nonsense, like rubbing them with a flannel to toughen them up. It's all complete bollocks - sorry.

Basically when you start off, if you get positioning right, it shouldn't be painful. I had painful letdown for about six weeks because of skyrocketing hormone levels but that had nothing to do with my nips. Once you've got the baby latched right it'll be fine. But Kamillosan between feeds can be nice if you do get sore while you are both learning what to do.

another vote for Lansinoh - I used it both times AFTER for sore nips, worth every penny of the £10 & better than Kamillosan as you don'e have to wash it off before a feed.
