“Funny Turn” in 3rd trimester

Hello,

So I just had what I would describe as a funny turn, I’m 35 weeks pregnant and half way through making a cup of tea I all of a sudden felt like all of my energy drained from my body, I started to feel a bit breathless and dizzy, a headache began and weirdly enough I instantly felt like I needed the toilet! I sat on the floor for a bit and still feel a bit iffy (bit spacey and limbs feel drained) but has anyone else experienced this? Just reading back sounds like a bit of a panic attack but I felt fine in myself before! I have had headaches and dizziness on and off the last couple of weeks and I mentioned it to my midwife yesterday and she gave me iron tablets, my last blood test they weren’t low but on the lower end. BP was all fine!

I’ve not had exactly what you described but it does sound like a panic attack to me to be honest. I’m 39 weeks and a few nights ago I did have a pretty extreme panic attack with dizziness, headache, chills etc. Came completely out of nowhere as I’d been feeling relatively optimistic about the birth before that. I’ve also found I’ve had a lot more weird symptoms this past week but I think that may be due to hyper focusing on how I feel now. Hopefully your iron tablets will help too

Thanks @Dove88 this is what I’m thinking! I have been thinking of the birth quite a lot - also I think maybe I got up a bit quick, felt dizzy & then started to panic!

It could be a stab in the dark but might be worth having a blood pressure check?
When I was 36 weeks i had a weird episode one evening when feeding the cats.
I came over really hot and clammy, felt suddenly exhausted and dizzy.
I had to sit down before I fell down.
It felt like someine had taken every single drip of energy from me. My arms and legs felt like ton weights and i could barely hold my head up.
My blood pressure was through the roof and for me, it was the start of pre-eclampsia.
Maybe mention it to your midwife when youre next in or if youre worried contact triage?

That happened to me but at 30 weeks, I was in a pub having lunch at the time. I delivered dts two days later. I don't want to scare you but please get checked, at least give them a call and see what they say. In my case it was the beginning of a placental abruption.

Honey2 · 05/02/2022 11:07

@Flutterby8 that’s what I was thinking - I have similar episodes and it’s related to low blood pressure.. (although I note yours was normal when you say the me OP) I find it happens if I stand still in one spot for a while.

Flutterby8 · 05/02/2022 11:21

@Honey2 I did have relatively low BP throughout pregnancy and symptoms for that and the high BP were actually very similar.
Its always good to be checked though. Things can change so quickly during pregnancy.
From being told I had very high BP, I was induced a few hours later and had DD 2 weeks early.
It was terrifying but the hospital did the right thing.

I have had spells like this even pre pregnancy and they happened more frequently in my first tri. Turns out my blood pressure kept dropping and ir had been on the low side anyway.

SunnySideUp2020 · 05/02/2022 19:56

Had this once in ny 3rd trim. In the middle of a shop. Honestly thought i was dying. Couldn't breathe properly etc...
I think it was a panick attack. Only happened once though....

I've had exactly the same this week (3 times) but I'm only 28 weeks pregnant. I have had my iron levels tested again and my blood pressure is low. I brought some iron sachets off amazon which I'm going to try. I was literally in the supermarket the other evening and had to hold onto the clothes rail because I felt I was going to collapse. Funnily enough for me though its been happening since I had covid 3 weeks ago, although probably not related!

potentialdogowner · 05/02/2022 20:14

It's scary when that happens! It could have been a vasovagal attack - basically some sort of stimulus causes your heart to slow and BP to drop making you feel faint. It's totally normal. I can get it from standing too long / stubbing my toe / thinking about something queasy! It made me think of it cause you mentioned needing the toilet, as it can also be triggered by digestive cramps.

Thanks so much for all the replies @potentialdogowner @Missnicolinda96 @SunnySideUp2020 @Flutterby8 @itwasntaparty @traveltheworld1986 @Honey2

I’m going to see how I get on tomorrow - strangely today it happened once again, I’ve had Braxton hicks on and off all day and this evening sure I’ve lost a little bit of my mucus plug. Wondering if labour is immanent - did also think that I started on the raspberry leaf tea this week so wondering if that’s triggering something! Definitely going to speak to my midwife on Monday (or at least try to) she said my BP was ‘perfect’ at my last visit but it has been low on and off for years!
