Hello all

So I used to be a heavy smoker then started vaping (haven't had a cig since). I vaped for the first 10.5 weeks of my pregnancy trying to convince myself it wasn't as bad as cigs and that it was just nicotine but recently whilst awaiting my 20 week scan I have worried myself sick that perhaps those early days of vaping has negatively impacted my baby? Quitting was incredibly hard for me I suffer with anxiety and depression (also on antiDs) and I'm proud of myself that I have but can't help but feel sick with worry about what impact it could have had in first trimester.

Has anyone else vaped throughout their pregnancy and had a healthy baby?

Please don't judge me just looking for reassurance!

Thanks

I'm 13 weeks and vaping. I've cut down to 0mg nicotine so now it's just the habit and I'm using it a lot less often now but still daily. I did a lot of research at the start and didn't find anything that made me overly concerned although my plan is to completely stop when I feel ready.

ValBiro · 04/02/2022 10:34

I did. And she's fine (4 now) and strong as an ox! Can't remember whether it was 0mg nicotine either.

You'll receive judgement from others I'm sure (on here anyway) but that was my experience!

Nik84 · 04/02/2022 10:52

I did and I lost my baby at 10 weeks. NHS advice was it was safe. I have a huge amount of guilt and will not be vaping if I fall pregnant again 😔

WhatTheEll · 04/02/2022 11:00

I totally get the vaping need! There's not enough info about, but one thing I did find was that it can affect implantation so I stopped whilst we were TTC.
10 weeks pregnant now and last vaped November, god I miss it

MellowBird85 · 04/02/2022 11:08

Yes. I had preeclampsia and DS was born 5 weeks premature (3lb 5oz) but I think that’d have happened anyway.

Vaping is much safer during pregnancy than smoking

Danikm151 · 04/02/2022 11:14

I was part of a clinical trial that provided me with a vape during pregnancy. Supported by medics.
It’s the lesser of 2 evils

Midsummer1991 · 04/02/2022 11:31

You’ve done an amazing thing stopping smoking. Celebrate that! Vaping doesn’t have the risks of second hand smoke to other people around you and none of the toxins that can pass to the baby that are found in tobacco smoke. I’m sure over time you can work on cutting the vaping out, but until then celebrate what an incredible thing you’ve done by stopping smoking and enjoy your 20 week scan.

ValBiro · 04/02/2022 12:24

@Midsummer1991 that is such a lovely, well reasoned post!

@Nik84 sorry for your loss Flowers

S0987 · 04/02/2022 13:57

@WhatTheEll I miss it too I feel guilty for missing it I wish I didn't but I couldn't bare exposing baby to it now the guilt of that would be much much much worse!!

@Danikm151 that's interesting Dani do you mind giving me more info about it? What was the general results of the trial was it still bad but just the lesser of two evils or was it generally seen as ok?

I'm trying to find some reassurance :(

@Midsummer1991 thanks so much I really appreciate your encouraging words apart from my stop smoking advisor no one has really said that to me
I still feel awfully guilty for vaping in first trimester and if god forbid something came out negative at 20 week scan knowing me I would put it straight down to vaping even if it weren't the case and feel sickeningly guilty for the rest of my life

I didn't know I was pregnant until I was already 14 weeks so I had been vaping non-stop during (6mg nicotine, sometimes higher) during the first trimester. I vaped so much I would cough or have a very dry mouth. Not knowing I was pregnant, I was already worried about the impact of it but couldn't cut down.

When I found out I was pregnant, I was very concerned as you can imagine but the GP, mid-wife and consultant didn't seem bothered at tall. They only asked if I smoked cigarettes and suggest I cut down or stop vaping if I can. All looked well on a detailed private scan at 15 weeks and the 20 week scan is in two weeks. I'm taking my cue from the medical professionals and not worrying about that.

As @Midsummer1991 said you've already done an amazing thing in not smoking and not smoking is the crucial thing.

I didn’t actually get the results of the trial!
But they tried some with nicotine patches and others with a vape.
The idea was to get off the cigs as the smoke is more harmful than a vape.
They wanted to see what worked better- I think vapes had more success than patches

KizboBaggins · 04/02/2022 21:38

I vaped up to about 8 weeks and worked damn hard to quit. I was really proud of myself when I did, and felt a little smug when I told the midwife - her response was "I wouldn't care if you were still vaping. As long as you don't smoke it doesn't matter". So I was a little deflated after all the effort of quitting but also very reassured that she wasn't concerned about it!

Giving up smoking is massive OP - don't forget what a huge hurdle you have overcome there! Don't be so hard on yourself Smile

Maybepossibly22 · 04/02/2022 21:43

You’ve done so well to stop smoking OP!

I havdd we been pregnant twice, I vaped both times, first I had preeclampsia and had dd a week early at 5lb 12oz, second I had a MMC at 10 weeks. I’ve been told by health professionals that vaping is considerably better than smoking as you’ve not got all the tar/chemicals other than nicotine. We make our own vape juice so know exactly what goes into them.

bedfordmum2210 · 10/10/2022 22:35

Not sure if it's coincidence or not but I have found that whenever I vape it causes Braxton Hicks ! Is it just me? I'm going to stop somehow because it does worry me

Belly goes tight, aches and makes me feel sick

I'm 25 weeks x

MovinOnUp · 10/10/2022 22:41

You've done amazingly well to stop smoking.
I took up smoking again after the stress of my third miscarriage, Then found out I was pregnant the next month.
I vaped a little up til 8 weeks, No ill effects on the baby as far as we know, He was almost 10lbs with no health issues.
I spent a LOT of time in prenatal waiting rooms and they all contained posters about vaping being acceptable during pregnancy.

I did with my previous child I had a cigarette twice a day max and vaped indoors. He's fine and healthy but they did say they can see a few black stains on the placenta, slightly autistic but I believe that to be in the genes. I smoked and didn't cut down with my first and she had low birth weight also she gets very angry does cross my mind if nicotine withdrawal is part of her angry behaviour or if that's her personality . When my first child was 4 months I put her in one of those jumperoos and she absolutely loved it so much but only one of her legs could each the floor at the time now the other leg is weaker then the other. Thats my Biggest guilt. Now am preg with third child I vape these disposable ones (not the same vape I smoked with my other 2) and despite the nicotine in the vape it's more the potenet flavour and the sweet taste in the mouth that the baby doesn't like. There somthing about these disposable that doesn't want me to carry on anymore with this child more then my other 2. Believe every pregnancy is different this time round I hate the vape and have a gut feeling that the baby doesnt like the effects or flavours.

Rinatinabina · 17/12/2022 06:54

I did, 0mg but morning sickness meant that I didn’t really vape much for first half of pregnancy. DD has amazing lung capacity (3yr old, likes swimming under water, her teacher said her lung capacity for her age is impressive). Her nursery teachers all think she’s quite bright. Otherwise no issues, So tbh it doesn’t seem to have made any difference to her.

Msgrieves · 17/12/2022 07:08

I smoked during my pregnancies (not proud) vaping wasn't really much of a thing then. Children are all fine.

Tbh means nothing, I smoked from teenage years and had childhood asthma. A lung capacity test at work had me in the upper centiles lol

laurenGame · 17/12/2022 13:56

I vaped loads until the moment I found out I was pregnant. Went cold turkey and every time I'd pick up the vape I would visually imagine smoke getting into my little bean's organs.

It was so hard quitting nicotine so abruptly but I did it. Mind you bub is now 6 months and I'm back on the vapes Blush I really didn't want to start again but sleepless nights with a colicky baby made me pick it up again. He's formula fed by the way.

Bluecrystalp · 05/08/2023 17:54
