Hi, I'm a first time pregnant person so often riding worry waves. I went to the dentist yesterday with tooth ache. He said I have a mild infection in a back tooth (not sure if it's pre-molar or molar). He has given me antibiotics. He said I could not have a root canal until after the baby is born as the medications cannot be used during pregnancy. In the time between now and then I can try to keep the infection at bay with antibiotics but the infection could come back. The only other option at this point is to have the tooth removed. To have a permanent 'tooth' implant would cost upwards of £2000, and fur to the position of the tooth the procedure could damage the two teeth on either side. Or I could have a removable denture. I'm really upset as I don't want to be missing teeth but also I don't love the idea of waiting for a root canal until the baby is born incase the infection comes back and spreads (meaning I got to put up with the pain, the tooth my not be salvageable by that point anyway and the infection could have spread). Also confusingly I've been googling (obviously) and everywhere I am seeing that root canal is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Does anyone have any advice please? I'm feeling pretty peed off. Thanks very much

Hi@KJStewpot I wouldn't worry yourself to much about it take the antibiotics then see how you feel before making a decision to remove it however a molar tooth is at the very back and no one is going to know it's missing I would have been stressing more if it was more at the front I hope this helps you in some way and congratulations.

@KJStewpot I did forget to add I was a dental nurse for 14 years and dentists dont like to do root treatment on pregnant woman because you have to be lying back for a couple of hours.
