Im 36 weeks, and whilst dh and I have some names we are mulling over, we just can not decide!
We dont know if we are having a boy or girl, but, somehow, we are both convinced it will be a boy. (Dont mind either way!! would be very happy with a litter of kittens at this stage!)
For boys, we always loved the name Oscar, despite our families not liking it (my father in law told us it sounded like a dogs name!!) That was until about a week or so ago when my mum announced to us that a baby in Eastenders had been named Oscar - its really taken the shine off it for us. We liked it cause it was slighly unusual, but now feel its going to become tres popular how annoying.
Other names we like are Noah and Reuben. As my dh is insisting on 2 middle names, God knows why, it is even more difficult. However, I was in Tesco today, and heard this woman calling to her little one, and I just thought to myself, "NOAH! NOAH!" across the fruit and veg aisle, and Im just not sure. I want to be able to love my childs name, not just think its ok.
For girls we like (in no particular order) Amelie, Isabelle, Poppy, Daisy, and Alice. Again we have the same quandry about the 2 middle names thing. So in effect we have to decide on 3 beautiful names that all fit together, where the initials dont spell anything or mean anything, that sound right, and are popular without being too popular!
STRESS!!!!!!!!!!
Please help before I go crazy.
ps on top of this I think my nesting instinct has kicked in and I cant stop making lists involving such items as "replace plinth under kitchen sink", "must read manual for steriliser and breastpump", "re-sand and oil kitchen worktops" and "wash all babygrows in non-bio powder"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
plus im up at nearly 5am on bloody mumsnet when i should be fast asleep in my bed, but the un-named bump is making it impossible!!!!

Have a look on Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_names My DS 3 will be Felix (I think ... due May) and my runner up is Lucas. My DS2 was Kai and the runners up were Leon and Dominic. My DS1 is Sebastian and the runner up was Alexander. Good Luck!

pussycatmomma · 29/12/2007 05:23

thanks for the link - there are some lovely unusual ones on there. So far, it appears I have a Swedish recessive gene - Noah, William and Oscar are all in their top 10!
any ideas gratefully received.

Amelie;Isabelle and Alice are all lovely names. Not so keen on Poppy and Daisy as they are a bit girly, and don't really suit an adult.

What about Willow or Esme?

For a boy -
Oliver
Sebastian
Gabriel (I've seen that name mentioned a few times on MN!)
Izaac
Raphaël

colditz · 29/12/2007 08:40

I couldn't decide either - so i limited myself to the old testament and chose from there both times. perhaps you could do something similar/

glucose · 29/12/2007 08:43

Poppy is a fab name!
Alex and Sam are nice for boys
I have also met boys called
Dante
Treveleyan (?spelling)
Benedict
Devan and a Devon
Archie
Valentine (Val)
and one called London

Bubbaloo · 29/12/2007 08:47

We have an Oscar James and an Ethan Samuel and obviously love the names.
When pg with ds1 everyone hated the name Oscar but of course now he'd here, they love it.Everyone we meet comments on what a nice name it is,although I know 2 cats and also a dog with the same name.Doesn't bother me in the slightest and I couldn't imagine him as anything else.

LoveAngelGabriel · 29/12/2007 08:52

Honest opinions: I think names like Poppy are way too cutesy. Lovely for a chubby little 2 yr old. A bit wet for a high powered career woman. . Oscar is already incredibly common where I am (north London) as is Noah (surely must be the name of the year?). I like Alice and Amelie - both simple and classy. Have you trawled through a few of those naming websites?

We settled on a good biblical name for our son - runners up were Jacob & Caleb. We had a list of about 4 names I think (can't remember the others`0 and when he was born, one of them just jumped out at us. Maybe that's the best way?

Uki · 29/12/2007 09:29

WOW Three names is a bit hard, no wonder your stressed but agree with loveangelgabriel, it's good to have a couple and then decide when you see him/her.

Don't you have any family names for middle names, grandparents names, or even your own as middle names it's nice to have names with some meaning.

i like
Oscar Braiden....
Ashton Carter....
Jaxon Marcel...
Hugh

I reckon your parents will like whatever you call him/her, they sound like mine and are best kept in the dark about names till baby comes, as they will criticize whatever you ave before, but love it when he/she is here.

Amelie Frances Ruby
Angeline Isabelle Daisy

just keep playing with them all you'll find the one and get the benches clean too.

Pk616 · 29/12/2007 09:35

ooh I like benedict!
I think that it somewhat depends on your surname as well. We've had to rule out loads of names because they just don't sound right with the surname.
this is a good website for names, our lo's name is there so it's definately thorough! (kya elspeth) although our alternate, incase she turns out to be a boy, isn't, but you won't find that on any baby names site! (kyuss zappa)

Lizzylou · 29/12/2007 09:37

I have a Benedict, shortened to Benny/Ben/Bennyboy(!), he is luscious and the name really suits him and will "grow" with him. Also, we have never come across another one in these parts....

JackieNoel · 29/12/2007 09:37

On your OP - can't remember who it was on here that mentioned that all names have to pass the HATSHIT test - which stands for 'Hard To Shout in Tescos'. Whatever you end up with - check it passes the test.

cleaninglady · 29/12/2007 09:39

I always had a girls name picked out for when i got pregnant and it suited DD when she was born so I was happy ! I would say go for something thats not to different and easy to spell as having to spell your name out every time for the rest of your life can be tiring ! The Poppy/Daisy thing i agree with a previous post - nice for little girls but not for a grown woman? maybe use of those as a middle name? Friend of mine has just had a baby girl and named her Ruby which I think is lovely.
Boys a lot more difficult but Noah does seem to be very popular nowadays and Oscar will be in the top 5 next year after the eastenders baby! I like Lucas which someone said - my DS ended up as Jacob Alexander as we just couldnt find a name we both loved but it does suit him and he has grown into it!

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2007 09:41

My son is called Kenneth. Now 29yrs it has suited him whatever his age. Middle name Lawrence.

Every one else was called James etc at the time.

Nbgdoesnthaveachristmasname · 29/12/2007 09:56

I'm sniggering quietly to myself because I was in this position a few weeks ago

Anyway we have an Ellis Niall and an Ethan James.

Other names we picked were Rowan/Rohan, Austin, Mack, Burton (dh's idea), Devon and Cole.

Frizbe · 29/12/2007 10:01

I like

Alexander
Michael
Theo
Nathaniel
Sebastian

Mumblesmummy · 29/12/2007 10:47

Amelie is lovely, so is Amelle.

What about Amelie Naimh (as in Neve) Rose. Or Amelie Naimh Isabelle. Or just Amelie Naimh. Isabelle Amy Naimh? Elese? Alyssa?

I like Eithne aswell. I think that's how it's spelt. It's Irish and it's said 'ay-th-nee'

Maybe Beth could work as a middle name? We've used DPs dad's name as middle name, it might be worth using names of family members for middle names.

We've picked Kaeden for a first name but we also loved Luca. I like Theo and DPs godson is called Kai. Saul?

Caleb's nice and it was the first brother to walk into the promised land.

UniversallyChallenged · 29/12/2007 10:50

Luca/Luka

Malakai/Malachi

Don't feel pressured to come up with a list of names before the baby is here. You don't need to name your child the moment s/he pops into the world. A name is a very important thing, it's something you have to walk around with the rest of your life so give it time. You may find the perfect name for your child just pops into your head when you first see his/her face!
Coming up with names for your child can and should be a good way to bond with your partner and it should be enjoyable. Please don't make it into a stressful activity!
Here's an idea, You could get one of those baby name books or down load all the names off a babyname website and cross out or remove all the names you and your partner don't like.
then you could cross out all the ones you think are too hard to spell or pronounce or that don't sound right with your surname or are too commonly used and wittle the list of possible names down bit by bit like this leaving you with a much smaller range of options for when the LO arrives!

NowTheHollyBearsABero · 29/12/2007 11:29

Isabelle is beautiful. Is (as Isabel) on our list for a (very!) hypothetical dd. Alice is lovely too but we couldn't use it as the German pronunication (stress on 2nd syllable) rather spoils it IMO.

Boys - I considered Reuben for ds2 - it means 'see, a son!' and I was convinced he was a boy before I knew so it would be appropriate for you too. Benedict is lovely. And we might have called ds2 Emmanuel if we hadn't already had a Samuel...

Our dses have three names each, fwiw.

sannie · 29/12/2007 15:59

DS2 due in 4 weeks will most probably be Henry....DS1 is Joseph (shortened to Joe which is lovely)....

I was worried that Henry sounded really ''posh'' and was worried about whjat other people would think but if you love a name just go with it.......

For a girl, we had Isabel Alexandra....

scrummymummy1965 · 29/12/2007 16:07

How about Joel, Luca, Alfie.
