Im 36 weeks, and whilst dh and I have some names we are mulling over, we just can not decide!
We dont know if we are having a boy or girl, but, somehow, we are both convinced it will be a boy. (Dont mind either way!! would be very happy with a litter of kittens at this stage!)
For boys, we always loved the name Oscar, despite our families not liking it (my father in law told us it sounded like a dogs name!!) That was until about a week or so ago when my mum announced to us that a baby in Eastenders had been named Oscar - its really taken the shine off it for us. We liked it cause it was slighly unusual, but now feel its going to become tres popular how annoying.
Other names we like are Noah and Reuben. As my dh is insisting on 2 middle names, God knows why, it is even more difficult. However, I was in Tesco today, and heard this woman calling to her little one, and I just thought to myself, "NOAH! NOAH!" across the fruit and veg aisle, and Im just not sure. I want to be able to love my childs name, not just think its ok.
For girls we like (in no particular order) Amelie, Isabelle, Poppy, Daisy, and Alice. Again we have the same quandry about the 2 middle names thing. So in effect we have to decide on 3 beautiful names that all fit together, where the initials dont spell anything or mean anything, that sound right, and are popular without being too popular!
STRESS!!!!!!!!!!
Please help before I go crazy.
ps on top of this I think my nesting instinct has kicked in and I cant stop making lists involving such items as "replace plinth under kitchen sink", "must read manual for steriliser and breastpump", "re-sand and oil kitchen worktops" and "wash all babygrows in non-bio powder"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
plus im up at nearly 5am on bloody mumsnet when i should be fast asleep in my bed, but the un-named bump is making it impossible!!!!

Well, my friends and I have 14 boys between us and not a pink one in sight!!

My son is Zack Robert Patrick - my hubby loves George if we get another boy - I'm keener on Louis...

Triplets born last month to my friend were James, Luke & Harry...

Others in my group are Calum, Owen, Theo, Lewis, Toby, Jamie, Mason, Mitchell, Ben & Thomas...

My only friend with a little girl is Milly..

Good luck - its not an easy task!!

pussycatmomma · 30/12/2007 00:31

hi blankie! i just posted again on the other thread
Again good suggestions, out of the 2 new posts, im loving:
Linus, Gabriel, Otto, Lars, Finn, Max and Milo.
so along with the others that dh hasnt yet vetoed, we also have Ellis, Noah, Jonah, Reuben and Max.
When i first became pregant we almost instantly decided on Oscar William Noah.
How easy i thought it would be!
How wrong I was!
Bloody script-writers to Eastenders!
Bloody hormones!!!!!
sorry to keep repeating myself, but like I said before, it has to be workable into a 3 name split (first name and 2 middles. surname starts with J and has 2 syllables)
Got that everyone?
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. just shouted into my dh - he only likes Gabriel out of the top list. But Milo and Max as possible middle names.
(((((((((((((((stop being so bloody fickle man!!!!!! agree with me for heavens sake. I am full of hormones! you dont know what effect this is having on me!! ))))
pusscat slinks off to fan herself down and have a glass of milk to calm her frayed nerves.........

At least this pondering is keeping your mind off the impending birth, eh pcm?!

We're all fine here. Mathilda Beatrice Rose (you just can't beat two middle names, poncetastic in the extreme) is nearly 8 months and the best thing that ever happened to us. And the best thing in Norfolk since that time all the cows went funny in the 70s. Told dh today that you're nearly due and expected him to say 'eh what?' but he muttered something about ovaries and drills and wandered off. Not only does he listen, he remembers!

A friend has just had a Rupert and they call him Roo for short. I think it's lovely but dh says it's a bit 'hooray henry' for his tastes.

Do you have any male relatives that you particularly look up to as that's often a good way of finding names too. Beatrice was dh's Granny and Rose is my SIL's middle name!

beforesunrise · 31/12/2007 08:43

i like Cosmo for a boy. have met an Atticus (mind you, not recommending, but you should make up your own mind!).
like Matthew, Thomas, Alexander, Louis.

for girls my top choices would currently be Mathilde, Emilia, Rosa. DD is Clara Sofia, you can steal it if you want :-)

i like Daisy but not Poppy- frankly wouldnt worry too much about the grown up woman thing, the Economic Secretary (Chancellor's right hand) is called Kitty and a silly name like Cherie didnt stop ms Booth becoming a kickass lawyer!

good luck!

beforesunrise · 31/12/2007 08:44

also like Leon for a boy!

Chardonnay1966 · 31/12/2007 10:18

Love threads like this, gives u a real insight into the current state of the nation! Just wanted to add my suggestions.... Jasper and Sebastian. Woulda had them if I'd had any boys. but got two girls instead. they are Madeleine (which obviously has some q.sombre connotations these days)and Esme. Choose wisely my dear, lotsa love!

Minkus · 31/12/2007 13:23

My list gets revised endlessly but currently consists of:

Girls

Isla Lisette Penelope Lily Laurel Summer Edie Beatrice Nell Martha

Boys

Jacob Oliver Hugh Clark Barnaby Sebastian Louis

Hugh is fave for a boy with Sebastian being a close second so may be a middle name. My favourite girls name ever was Kitty but a close friend stole it, oh the resentment, hence my new favourite girls name is not on the list as it is so beautiful and so unusual (to us of course) that if anyone in Herefordshire or Gloucestershire (Cheltenham area) stole that too I would hunt them down like the dogs they were (I told you there was a lot of resentment!)

FWIW I think I'm having another boy so not sure why I'm so hung up on keeping the girls name secret. We already have a Toby Robert, Robert being a tradition for first born boys in dh's family, although wish I'd called him Tobias as this sounds waaay better when giving a good telling off!

NorthernLurker · 31/12/2007 14:16

We were going to have Benedict for a boy - Ben - nice and short, Benedict lovely and Shakespearean! Didn't need it though - I have a Beatrice though

Pollyanna · 31/12/2007 14:23

we have:

Fred (current favourite)
Hugo
Felix (my fave, but dh is not so keen)
Nathaniel
Barnaby
Benjamin/benedict
Johnny
Finn (Finlay
Rafferty
Jesse
Sebastian

Dh only likes Fred out of those. He wants Joe or Tom.

I also like Henry - but it is ds's middle name.

For girls:

Mimi (Amelia, Miranda or Mary)
Cecilia
Florence
Elizabeth
Catherine (Kitty)
Lily
Hero
Hermione
Clementine
Martha
Mabel
Tallulah

I have a Charles and 2 of the girls names on your list already )
i should say, that I have had to compromise with dh over every name I have chosen, and have had to abandon the names I thought I loved, but I have grown to love them.

rascal1979 · 01/01/2008 21:45

Love the name Amelie - we chose it for our DD who was born on 15th Dec. Her full name is Amelie Jayne.

Chunkamatic · 01/01/2008 22:20

I am in a very similar position. We have recently become convinced that we are having a boy purely because we cant decide on a name!!! It has been driving both me and dp mad, so I have now resolved to make the decision when I meet the little fella.

As you can see from the various posts here, names are a total matter of taste and you will always have someone to tell you that any given name is rubbish/ugly/a dogs name/girly/chavvy etc etc etc. Dont let it affect you, once your LO is here and you have named him/her then it will be hard to imagine them being called anything else at all!

Good Luck!!

WestCountryLass · 01/01/2008 22:29

I REALLY wanted DS2 to be Gabriel but DH said no so he is Leo. I also love the names Francis (DS1's MN) and Aidan.

I think your girls names could go in any order and would be great! I vote for Alice Isabelle Daisy as I think Alice is the least popular name at the moment and so more unusual and the other names flow.

dizzydixies · 01/01/2008 23:24

hi there
you could try doing a poll on babycentre.co.uk
one of their main forums is a babynames page and its really popular with people with some very VERY knowledgable baby namers - I have to admit I'm a bit of a lurker and some of the names they come up with are fantastic!
otherwise babynameworld.com run a service where they will email you 3 names suggestions everyday up until your due date and give you further suggestions depending on ones that you 'like'

am showing myself up now so will leave it there!
hth
mj

fyi we have 2dd
Isabella Jane Rose - 'ella'
Alexandra Rae Cecelia - 'lexie'

loler · 04/01/2008 15:20

I descovered Seth just after ds2 was born. really love it but was too late!

We went for Euan George which I didn't love before he was born but 4 months later he has grown into and couldn't imagine anything else.

Will have to have another baby to use seth

good luck with the baby.

scorpio1 · 04/01/2008 15:25

My contenders are:
Oscar (sod EastEnders)
Benedict
Theo
Isiah
Sebastian
Jasper
Linus

We're pretty set on Mia if it's a girl, but after reading this thread I also like
Clementine
Claudia
and Esme

sannie · 04/01/2008 17:48

hi pussycatmomma....

due 28th Jan but feeling ready to pop anyday We have decided for sure on Henry George (shortened to Harry)
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy....

pussycatmomma · 05/01/2008 22:13

hi everyone.
Makecakesnotwar = its flosspot isnt it? So wonderful to hear you are pregnant!!! So very very pleased for you sweetie, and what beautiful names! Congratulations! Hope everything goes smoothly for the rest of your pregnancy. I will keep my eye out for you - when are you due?
We are slightly further forward on our boys names selection. We have
Noah, Ellis, Isaac or Reuben as strong contenders for first place, and
Oscar, Jonah, Theo, Gabriel, Milo and Max as runners for middle names.
Any suggestions for combinations of these (first name and 2 middle names) would be ever so gratefully received! You have all done brill so far
Prince Edward would have done ok to come on mn to name his little one! Anyone know if they finally decided?
Anyway, I digress. .....
If babe is to be a girl, I think we are more or less(!) decided on
Amelie Alice Hope.
Great to keep hearing from you lovely ladies. There are some gorgeous names you have all chosen out there. Makes me a little miffed I was a child of the 70's!! Claire is so normal, and there were always at least 3 in each class at school!
