Im 36 weeks, and whilst dh and I have some names we are mulling over, we just can not decide!
We dont know if we are having a boy or girl, but, somehow, we are both convinced it will be a boy. (Dont mind either way!! would be very happy with a litter of kittens at this stage!)
For boys, we always loved the name Oscar, despite our families not liking it (my father in law told us it sounded like a dogs name!!) That was until about a week or so ago when my mum announced to us that a baby in Eastenders had been named Oscar - its really taken the shine off it for us. We liked it cause it was slighly unusual, but now feel its going to become tres popular how annoying.
Other names we like are Noah and Reuben. As my dh is insisting on 2 middle names, God knows why, it is even more difficult. However, I was in Tesco today, and heard this woman calling to her little one, and I just thought to myself, "NOAH! NOAH!" across the fruit and veg aisle, and Im just not sure. I want to be able to love my childs name, not just think its ok.
For girls we like (in no particular order) Amelie, Isabelle, Poppy, Daisy, and Alice. Again we have the same quandry about the 2 middle names thing. So in effect we have to decide on 3 beautiful names that all fit together, where the initials dont spell anything or mean anything, that sound right, and are popular without being too popular!
STRESS!!!!!!!!!!
Please help before I go crazy.
ps on top of this I think my nesting instinct has kicked in and I cant stop making lists involving such items as "replace plinth under kitchen sink", "must read manual for steriliser and breastpump", "re-sand and oil kitchen worktops" and "wash all babygrows in non-bio powder"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
plus im up at nearly 5am on bloody mumsnet when i should be fast asleep in my bed, but the un-named bump is making it impossible!!!!

George - you just can't beat it.

I also have an Oscar. Grrrr to Eastenders.

yomellamoHelly · 29/12/2007 16:43

Have an Adam William and a Guy Christopher.

Oscar quite popular in our area (Kingston). As is Isaac, Joshua, Luke and Daniel. Not met any Noahs, but do know a couple of Reubens (one of whom is a Benny).

Our starting point for both was the local and national list of most popular names.

Sidge · 29/12/2007 16:45

Boys names I like are:

William
Oliver
Samuel
Morgan
Benedict
Sebastian
Jacob
Joseph
Harry

Girls names:

I like Isabelle/Isobel, as well as Alice and Amelie but I don't like Poppy and Daisy I'm afraid - too "little girly" for me.

My list would be

Claudia
Clara
Esther
Esme
Imogen
Jessica
Octavia (don't laugh, it's a name that I love and could never use!)
Olivia

oh thank you ladies, my original post at 5am seems like an age ago!!! I love some of the suggestions - dh, however, appears not to. He says no to : Lucas, Theo, Isaac, Lars, Emilio, and George. Unfortunately our dog is called Archie, so that is out, but it would have been in the running if the dog hadnt come before the baby!
However he has said maybe to : Ellis and Sebastian.
I didnt realise Noah and Oscar were so popular already, down in the "big smoke"!! I am a northern bumpkin and know nothing of such city trends!!
I am right, aren't I, Oscar is gonna be huge, as such alot of folks watch the little square box in the corner and take their inspiration from it directly (Eastenders baby). Such a shame, they have cocked things up good and proper!!
Showofhands - how are you!!!!? long time no see! ive just shouted all your name suggestions through to dh, sadly none are runners
Sannie, it sounds like we are due the same time, my due date is 24th January.

I also had

COOPER
OSCAR
KEANE
BRAXTON
FLETCHER
PARKER
ASPEN
ISIAH

daisynova · 29/12/2007 16:51

I don't understand this trend for naming your baby one name and then shortening it. Why not just give the child the shortened name in the first place? Sorry but it is someting that drives me insane.

We had chosen 3 names that could have been used for a girl as they really stuck out for us but then we found out I was having a boy and we just can't agree on names. We have a shortlist but none of them jump out at me the way the girls names did.

My names are:

Aaron
Sean
Ross

though DH wants Angus or Willem (we live in Amsterdam at the moment so despite being Scottish, hubby thinks a Dutch name would be nice - hmmm over my dead body!).

pussycatmomma · 29/12/2007 16:53

forgot to say please keep suggestions coming!
If we go for the Alice/ Amelie/ Isabelle groupings for a girl, which 2 sound nicest with the name Hope as a 2nd middle?
It would be Amelie Alice Hope, Isabelle Alice Hope, Amelie Isabelle Hope or Isabelle Amelie Hope.
If I get to 40 weeks with my sanity intact it will be a miricle!!!!!

Dexter is my absolute fave boys name at the mo.

pity ( not really!)that my db3 is my first girl! Who we think is going to be Millie.

pussycatmomma · 29/12/2007 17:10

Millie! Thats lovely bloke at work had a baby girl they named her Millie, would suit all ages I think.

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 29/12/2007 17:12

i think it woould too, just a bit worried its number 20 in the charts. but yes, we ouldnt agree on anything else, unisex names kept coming up and we dont want to because she is our fourth child between us, the only girl. So we wanted an obvious girls name! I like Lacey and Teale also, think Teale may be her middle name. DP says no to Scout.

Other boys i know

Reilly (ds1)
Jamie Levi (ds2)
Brodie
Oakley
Logan
Mason
Jobi
Arlo

i do think Millie Scout C.... (surname has strong x sound in it)is lovely and quite cool still.

scorpio1 · 29/12/2007 17:18

Oh and dp has never read Cider With Rosie so thinks its just an obscure name, which it's not.

pussycatmomma · 29/12/2007 18:05

was there not a Scout in To Kill a mocking bird? or Catcher in the Rye?
sorry must be my hormones addling my brain and reducing it to trifle.

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 29/12/2007 18:08

Pcf I keep looking out for you not long now are you having baby at kings mill ? I am so very pleased for you any chance you might come and visit me at work when baby is born ? I shall give a few name ideas

Boy

Aidan- be nice remember thats my ds name
Toby, callum, thomas, tom ooh the list is endless

Girls Talia, neve, freya, fion, holly, dominica

Rynny · 29/12/2007 23:33

Our ds is Samuel Joseph.

Baby number 2 (20 weeks) is probably going to be Lily Rose if a girl but can't decide on a boy's name at the moment - got loads of time but the names we chose first time round (Samuel Joseph (obviously!) or Holly Mae) stuck from the beginning.

Possible boy's names:
Charlie
Harry
Toby
Benjamin
And, love Ted but haven't got the nerve to go for it!
Also love Alfie, but that would mean renaming the cat which is a little unfair after he's had it for 7.5 years!!

carmenelectra · 29/12/2007 23:40

i love Reuben but think its a bit like a dogs name(!)

Wanted Gabriel but DP said no way as it would be shortened to Gay. personally i thought it would be shortened to Gabe which is lovely.

In the end we had Jonah (which i love!!) Lucas.

Ds1 middle name is Gage which i still love!

Girls names i like are: Libby and Madeline

Magdeltwinkle · 29/12/2007 23:56

New baby boy I know, trendy nice parents called him Jim. Not James etc. Noticed a couple of middle names in case. Do you like it? I've noticed the other trendy names are the old ones like Stanley (or Stan) love it cos it was my fathers name.

pussycatmomma · 29/12/2007 23:57

ooooh, theres a new one for us - Jonah! I like it!! Only thing is our surname starts with a J so we would have the whole alliteration thing going on. I think sometimes it works and I really like it, other times it can look a bit... i dunno, made up iyswim.
Hmmmm. Jonah. I quite like that. Will run it past dh.
This thread is coming up with some good ones!

OP posts:
Magdeltwinkle · 29/12/2007 23:59

Pussy, I know a couple of kids with J as forename and also surnames and they are both know as JJ. Love it, cool?

MUMOFDJandP · 30/12/2007 00:00

I love Daniel James DJ for short (ds1) name x still my fave name ever

carmenelectra · 30/12/2007 00:01

i adore Jonah and before got preg dp liked it but then changed his mind!! Didnt want to bully him into a name he didnt really like but eventually he came round!! Im so glad!

Ds1 has ist and surname with same initals and i agree it can sound daft so i was a bit dubious, but it sounds ok. Not jokey at all!

blanki · 30/12/2007 00:05

We meet again!
Oscar shortened to Ozzie is fab IMHO!
Also considered
Alexander Xander
