Pregnant after MC, do I need to take aspirin?

Hi all

Ive just found out I’m pregnant, had an MC late last year and have had one successful pregnancy the year before that.

Due to my MC last year is it advisable to take aspirin or anything else? Obviously will consult with my GP about this but wanted to go in armed with some information first.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi, I've just found out I'm pregnant, 5 weeks. I've previously had two miscarriages in a row, this time I have researched the use of low dose aspirin and have decided to take it as such a low dose doesn't seem to harm the baby from what I have read. There have been a few studies in the US. My doctors have no interest in helping me so I have decided to take this myself, I'm hoping it all works out and I go on to have a healthy baby, I've never made it past 8 weeks

Luckyme30 · 26/01/2022 11:48

@22td hello and thank you for replying. I have asked for a call back from my doctor so will see what they suggest and let you know if it’s anything useful but I think like you I may just do the same.

Can I ask what dose you are taking?

Good luck with your pregnancy :)

Progesterone might be helpful as well.

After 3 miscarriages I was prescribed aspirin from 1dpo and progesterone from 3 dpo.

The GP is unlikely to say anything one way or the other. I had two losses before this pregnancy and I tried asking the GP whether it's safe or not and they just didn't even comment, just said I'd need to be under obstetrician care. So I'm taking it now, and did later get my midwife's blessing that it's completely safe. I started taking it pretty much as soon as I had my BFP, I'm taking 150mg in the evening. Made it to 24 weeks so far!

Machina01 · 26/01/2022 12:04

Just to say that I’m on 75mg daily and will be until I’m 36 weeks as it also helps with preeclampsia prevention.

Sadcatsandcoffee · 26/01/2022 15:22

I had one miscarriage before this pregnancy and it was a horrible experience so I researched a ton about this. I started 75mg of aspirin nightly (apparently it's more effective taken then) as soon I was pregnant again, although IIRC some studies have shown it's most effective from ovulation onwards. It doesn't seem to have any adverse effects at that dosage, only positive, so I don't know why it's not generally accepted advice.

At my booking appointment they told me to start taking it anyway as my BP was slightly high.

I also took progesterone (my sister had leftovers) but there's no way a GP would prescribe that here until you'd had 3 miscarriages. Her fertility specialist (Ireland, private) put her on it just in case, having had no miscarriages, so I do think it's more a cost thing as there doesn't seem to be any risks to progesterone, from what I've read.

Rachae · 26/01/2022 16:56

I'd get a hold of progestrone (cyclogest pessaries) and low does aspirin if you can. I've had 4 mcs and really well consulted/ researched. (14 weeks pregnant now) There's no harm to your potential baby to take either and it could help sustain your pregnancy. Good luck xxx

GinnyBee · 26/01/2022 17:42

I also had progesterone too, got it prescribed after 2 losses, bit of a consolation prize I think as the consultant wouldn't take me on as a patient for further investigations yet. NICE guidance has since been updated and it should be easier to get now even after "just" one mc.

Luckyme30 · 27/01/2022 19:23

Thank you everyone for your replies. I’m still waiting on a call back from my GP but soon as I hear back I’ll be asking about progesterone too.

@Luckyme30 hey did you ever decide if to start taking it or not? 😊

Luckyme30 · 01/02/2022 17:04

@22td I spoke with my GP on Friday and he said there were no risk factors which would mean I should take it so I’ve decided against it.

Hey did anyone take low dose aspirin after 1 miscarriage?

MimiArm · 10/02/2022 17:41

@jjunaki100 - I did, and I'm now 17 weeks pregnant.

I took 75 mg from ovulation (and was given progesterone to take from then too by my fertility clinic).

NHS upped my aspirin to 150 mg daily from 14 weeks, and I'll be stopping the progesterone in a day or two when I run out.

Kaw10 · 10/02/2022 18:10

@jjunaki100 same here as @MimiArm, I had a miscarriage last summer at 6/7 weeks. Possibly a chemical the cycle after but not too sure. So I also took 75mg aspirin from ovulation and progesterone from 2 days after ovulation. My gyn also upped the aspirin to 150mg and over just stopped the progesterone at 15 weeks.

Madwife123 · 10/02/2022 18:30

@Machina01 You’re on the wrong dose. It’s 150mg for prophylactic prevention of pre-eclampsia. Phone your consultant and ask them to change it.
Kaw10 · 10/02/2022 18:33

@Machina01 oh true, @Madwife123 is correct, and that's why they upped my dose to 150mg, to prevent preeclampsia.

Butterscotchbaby · 10/02/2022 18:47

I have recently found out that i am pregnant too, 4 weeks - i had a MMC last year - i have been reading about taking asprin - is it 75g up to 14 weeks and the 150g there after?

Machina01 · 10/02/2022 18:52

@Kaw10 @Madwife123

Thanks for the heads up but due to finish up next week anyhow. Blood pressure has been fine, consultant has always stuck with 75mg and I’m happy to trust him.

Kaw10 · 10/02/2022 18:54

@Machina01 ah good to hear! You're so close!!

jjunaki100 · 10/02/2022 21:00

So isit safe to take even if u had just 1 mc?

jjunaki100 · 10/02/2022 21:01

I'm ttc been 3 weeks since mc and jus been overthinking

MrsSiba · 10/02/2022 21:04

Worked for me, 75 mg daily. 2 losses then 2 consecutive successful pregnancies, the last one when I was 40.

I was diagnosed with anti-phospholipid syndrome.

Madbell · 12/02/2022 20:56

Hi All,

So sorry to hear of peoples miscarriages.
I experienced a 6 week miscarriage in December and have just found out I'm pregnant again which I feel hugely grateful for. I feel super anxious about having another mc and have been reading about taking aspirin to help prevent. I am keen to try it but after buying 75mg aspirin from boots it says on the leaflet that it's not advised for pregnant women.

Am I ignore that or have I bought the wrong thing?

jjunaki100 · 12/02/2022 21:12

@Madbell I'm on the same boat as u sis only has 1 recent mc but don't know if I can take aspirin for next pregnancy

Nat6999 · 12/02/2022 21:27

I had 2 mc & took 75mg aspirin with no advice up to 20 weeks with ds, I wish I had stayed with it to term as I got pre eclampsia at 36 weeks.
