Early scan dates wrong by 4 weeks?!

Good evening, this is my first time posting.
I found out I was pregnant 2 weeks ago. According to date of last period, I should have been 8 weeks. 3 days later I had a bleed. Fresh, red blood which only lasted around a minute. I called my gp who arranged a scan 2 days later. By the time the scan came I only had a brown discharge whenever I wiped myself.
The sonographer said that everything was where it should be, they could see a foetal pole but no heartbeat. The measurement was only 3mm which she said was around 5 weeks pregnant. At this stage I should have been around 9 weeks!
We arranged a scan for 2 weeks time to check if there's growth/ a heartbeat.
I'm half way through those 2 weeks of torture. It's agony. I've had no more bleeding, but I can't help wondering constantly about this huge discrepancy in dates.
When I missed my period initially I did take a pregnancy test which came back negative so is it possible that I basically missed a period then got pregnant the month after?! I've been on hormonal contraception for years on and off, I've never really been one to track my periods so don't really know how regular I am (I tracked my period before TTC and I varied from 30-35 days but never missed as far as I know).
I know no one can give me definitive answers but only my other half knows about this and I haven't really got anyone else to talk to about it.

Honestly it sounds like you ovulated late and that's all! Which would perfectly explain why the embryo would be measuring 5 weeks.

When was your first positive pregnancy test OP?

Clivetastic · 25/01/2022 11:37

7th Jan. Had my scan on the 14th.

Thanks very much for your reply. That's reassuring to read. The only other thing is that a day before my bleed my boobs suddenly stopped hurting and feeling hard and stiff. They now hurt but in a very different way. I generally feel very different to before but trying to hold on to the hope that it was an implantation bleed maybe? And everything is fine fingers crossed.

When was your last period? Are you accounting for the c.two weeks between last period amd ovulation? I.e. has sonographer has measured at 5 weeks from conception but you'd be "7 weeks" pregnant from date of last period?

My first positive test was 7th Jan. Scan was a week later. According to scan I was 'around 5 weeks' which means conception just before Christmas? My period was due around 12th December and I took a test about that time which came back neg. I'm sure I started having painful boobs around or just after Christmas. I was panicking at the time as I hadn't had a period but I wasn't pregnant so I thought we were having fertility problems. It was only after weeks of really painful boobs that I took the test again when it came back positive.

Last period was 11th Nov. I'm certain that the 5 weeks' included the added 2. As we briefly discussed the discrepancy between 9 weeks and 5 (not really much explanation, she just told me not to worry that it's so different). If I was 7 weeks then I think we should have seen a heartbeat which we didn't and it only measured 3mm which I think I is just over 5 weeks' whereas 7weeks is more like 10mm.

Hi @Clivetastic sorry I know this is an older post, I hope you don’t mind me asking how you got on? I had my early scan a couple of days ago at what I thought was 6weeks5 days. No heartbeat and measuring at 5 weeks… so hoping our dates are out. Interested to hear how others in similar situations have got on.

Susiesooz · 17/06/2023 18:28

Hi @Hedgehugs. This is Clivetastic with a different name now for some reason! I've probably got 2 accounts 🤦🏼‍♀️
The outcome wasn't good unfortunately. The reason for the discrepancy with the dates was that I should have been 8/9 weeks pregnant but the foetus had died at 5 weeks and it was a missed miscarriage.
The sonographer for the second scan was vastly different to the first. She said that we should have heard a heart beat in the first scan whereas the other (1st scan) sonographer said it's not unusual to not hear a heart beat measuring that size. I feel like she gave me unnecessary hope for 2 weeks. It was very difficult to work through mentally.
I'm sorry to tell you this but I thought it best to give you the honest truth of my experience. Obviously so many women have very different experiences, some are positive and some are not.
I wish you all the love and support during this horrible time in your life. I know exactly how you're feeling.
I can tell you that no amount of research will help you have any idea what your little nugget is doing in that womb. There's as many happy endings as sad ones. But it won't stop you because you don't know what else to do! Try to relax, try to love yourself and look after yourself.
Please let me know how you get on. I hope the news is good X X X
