Second Baby - Labour Length?

fejkalove · 21/01/2022 23:30

Hello,

I know it's often said that second labours are normally quicker but does anyone have any experience when there's been a large gap between children? My DD is 11 and due in May with second baby...I assume so much time has passed that this labour will be like having a first baby again?
Just looking for others experiences Smile

Thank you!

I started light contractions at about 6pm. Had a show about 8pm. Contractions got stronger and about ten mins apart by 10pm (I still have my pregnancy journal hence the times!). I felt comfortable so went to bed and slept on and off till about 4.30am when contractions were getting hard to manage and I really wanted some gas and air! Went to hospital and was home by 7.30 as I was only 3cm. Tried a bath but couldn't bear it. By 9.30 contractions were about 4 mins so went back to hospital. By the time I was examined it was about 11 and I was at 7cm. dd was born at 1.08. Of my 3 dc it was my favourite birth.

1st labour was 5.5hrs, 2nd labour was 18hrs, 3rd was 5hrs, 4th was spontaneous. Friends have have had totally different pattern. Honestly think we are all different and babies are all different.

Twister99 · 22/01/2022 10:12

My first labour was induced took 4 hours. 2nd wasn't induced took 3 hours from start to finish

mummyh2016 · 22/01/2022 11:02

First labour from first contraction to delivery was 20 hours, second labour from when I realised I was in labour to delivery was around 3 hours. 4.5 years between the two labours.

Following with interest! My first is only 17 months and I'm already 5 months! Hoping this one will be quicker after a 4 day induction last time I'm hoping the odds are In my favour! 🤣

Crazydoglady123 · 22/01/2022 23:21

I'm due to experience similar anytime so will let you know! DS is 10yo and I'm expecting baby #2 (girl) any day (40+2 today). DS was induced though at 42 weeks but from pessary to birth in 10 hours

LightSpeeds · 22/01/2022 23:24

Eight years between my first and second babies.

1st labour: 8 hours 27 minutes
2nd labour: 20 minutes (from when I knew for sure I was in labour)

Thomasthechick123 · 23/01/2022 06:35

8years apart, first labour can’t remember exactly but pushing stage was almost 2hours.
Second labour was 2& 1/2 hours all in, with a much shorter pushing stage.
Think if our bodies have done it before they remember what to do.

First time around my labour was something like four hours from me first noticing something was off to baby coming out. The official length of labour listed on my paperwork (as in, time from when THEY realised I was indeed in labour) was 34 minutes 😬

Expecting again now and kinda terrified I won't make it to the hospital!

Howtotameyourtoddler · 23/01/2022 06:58

Not a big gap, three years.

First baby was four hours from 4cm to delivery. All very straightforward and, dare I say it, easy.

Everyone told me that the second one would be really quick, plan for a homebirth, don't go too far away from home etc.

Waters broke at 4am and baby didn't arrive until 12 hours later. Once things really ramped up he arrived very quickly (within an hour) but it took a long time to get to that point. Completely different experience to the first and by no means the easy second delivery I had been promised! 😅

Mommabear20 · 23/01/2022 08:49

Mine were 13 months apart and second was twice as long as my first. Nothing is guaranteed! 😂

RoseMAR · 23/01/2022 09:05

4 year gap between my two DS.

DS1 40+1 labour was 7 hours
DS2 41+1 labour was 1.2 hours.

DP calls me a baby cannon, not sure if that's a compliment😂
