Hi I'm 14 weeks, we have guinea pigs but I just read online that pet rodents can be harmful to unborn babies due to a virus they carry... Anyone out there have guinea pigs and a baby??

What do I do in this situation? I just want my little one to be ok

OP where have been doing this reading? Have you got confused with rats and Weils disease? This is really not something you should be worrying about.

I think there’s a slight risk with cat poo and bearded dragons. Please don’t be fretting about your guinea pigs.

Not something they definitely carry, just something that might be a risk. Just practice good hygiene. It's very rare.

@WheelieBinPrincess ok thank you for being so kind and reassuring!

I was so worried! Longed for bump is doing really well and was so worried that I'd put the baby at risk.

It comes up on some American websites.

I'm very careful with hand hygiene but will definitely take extra care now

Ah to be honest OP i’d stick to U.K. based (factual !) stuff only. That goes in regards to all the NHS food lists as well. All countries are different in that so only the NHS one really applies reliably.

It can anxious time already without google setting you off into overdrive.

I don’t know anything about guinea pigs but if you are worried about what the correct information is maybe speak to your vet?

Latteandcappuccino · 24/01/2022 14:49

Neither the vet nor the midwife knew when I asked, so for now I'm just being extra careful with hand hygiene and the family are pitching in with the cleaning and care of the piggles. It's only for another few months so it's nbd

From what I remember this is really only if your pets have been exposed to wild rodents so you should be fine, obviously the pigs will need extra treats 😉
