Does my scan look ok?

I had a scan today at 14+1 and my baby doesn't look like a lot of other scans I've seen. I don't know if I'm just panicking but their head looks like a bit of a strange shape especially by the bottom jaw. Can anyone who knows anything about scans reassure me please?

Assuming this was an NHS scan then the person who's an expert in scans will have been the one looking at it with you in the hospital. If they didn't see anything to worry about, then I'd take their word for it. I'm no expect but it looks normal to me - they can vary a bit depending on the angle the baby is lying at, eg yours may have been turning its head to the side slightly which would change the jawline. Congratulations btw!

Thank you @Firefliess. Yes it was an NHS scan my 12 week one but was 2 weeks late due to the holidays. The sonographer did say they don't look for abnormalities until 20 weeks so I'm just panicking now I think 😂

It looks like it is chilling out with its hands behind its head. Very cool.

Firefliess · 18/01/2022 23:46

If it's not possible for trained medical professionals to spot abnormalities in 12 week scans then it's not possible for you either. Stop worrying!!

Your babies head looks perfect!

They can tell at this stage of abnormaloties with babies skull. I've had 2 anencephaly babies and we found this out with both of them at 12 weeks. If NHS are happy with babies shape, then you don't have anything to worry about. They have a beautiful looking head ❤️❤️

Thank you everyone so much! I think I'm just worrying as there seems to be a big gap between the jaw and the neck which I haven't seen on any other scans. I've had 2 losses and this will be our first (and only) baby. So my anxiety is through the roof and I'm over analysing everything I expect!

Thank you for sharing that @Blxo94 and I'm very sorry to hear this was the outcome of your scans ❤️

MY DD2's scan (at 13) weeks looked like a terrifying alien... nothing like other scans I've seen!
At 20 weeks it looked like a baby.. a short fat baby!
He's 9 months old now... and perfect (although he is going to be short unless he's a lot taller than both parents Grin)

Scans are weird.. it all depends on the angles, but your baby's head looks fine!

Mattieandmummy · 19/01/2022 07:48

Please try to keep in mind that what you are seeing is not a side view of your baby but a cut through of their body which always looks a bit odd because it only shows what can be seen at the point of the cut through. Also it's very unlikely that your LO remained in the the perfect position, perfectly still to help everyone out - they could have moved at the point of the photo or be looking in any direction really. I wouldn't worry too much, if the sonographer who sees multiple babies every day wasn't worried I don't think you should be either.

My firsts scan at around the same time looked like this with the jaw! I remember thinking how come everyone's else's scans look normal and mine looks like some kind of deformed alien. But of course my daughter is absolutely fine and beautiful in every way. The sonographer would say if there was anything not right xx

dg93 · 19/01/2022 08:22

I've just checked my 13 week scan (was also late) and mines exactly the same so please try not to worry.

I've had multiple scans since including a 4d one and she's been absolutely fine x
