28mm cervix, to start progesterone now or wait for 2 week scan?

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar position to me…

I had lletz to remove cin3 cells back in 2018 and I am now 17 weeks 4 days pregnant.

I was sent for an internal scan to measure my cervix today and the doctor said I am measuring around 28mm.

They gave me two options…

To either wait and have a scan in two weeks to see if there is any change to the length

Or to start progesterone now

I originally said I would wait for the scan as I wanted to read up on this first and I don’t particularly want to take medication unless it’s 100% needed, but now my anxiety has started that I am worried about what if I lost the baby

I am going to call the clinic tomorrow to speak to the doctor as I wasn’t given any information such as is there a high risk to waiting or what the risks are with taking the progesterone to the baby’s health or even mine

I have looked up the side effects and risks with progesterone and I am a little bit worried, but maybe that’s more long term use you need to be worried about!

Also I’ve seen that some people are only offered treatment if your cervix gets below 25mm or lower?

Has anyone else had a similar experience and what did you decide?

I started progesterone at around the same gestation with a similar cervical length. I was then offered the cerclage which I declined and kept on with the progesterone until maybe 32 weeks. I had DD at 34 weeks in the end. I would probably say to start it,I found the problem with it being my first was that there was a very 'watch and wait' stance whereas if I'd had a pre term labour before I would have had all these interventions offered more promptly. Hope all goes well for you.

No experience but I did have to have cervix measured due to a Lletz. Personally I would take the progesterone. Many ladies are on progesterone due to recurrent miscarriage and anyone doing IVF like me. There’s a lot of research around its effectiveness and safety. Could you try chat through the pros and cons with your midwife?

I was put on progesterone at around 23 weeks, my first cervical scan was at 21 weeks, I'd definitely take it if I am offered it earlier this time round, was so stressful last time, it shortened from 34mm to 24mm in just a week, which is why I was then put on the progesterone as wasn't able to have a stitch. I was on it until 36 weeks

Thanks for your advice! I’ll call the doctor up tomorrow and ask him any questions and ask for the prescription
