Cough mixture

Hi all,

I'm 29 weeks pregnant and have a horrible cold - just wondering, does anyone know what cough mixture I can take? I have been coughing to the point of vomiting and am desperate to take ANYTHING!

Nowhere is open where I am but have lots of stuff in the cupboard. Benilyn said if pregnant consult doctor or pharmacist, in the absence of one of those I'm consulting Mumsnet!

TIA

Try a spoonful of honey. A recent study showed it to be more effective then cough medicine. Cough medicine has very little effect, and quite strong durgs in them.

Or hot ribena as someone suggested on another thread.

Christmas Lauren

From one poorly sick pg woman to another - I'm feeling your pain too.

Had laryngitus and horrible cough (esp. in night) 2 weeks ago. The cough went, has now come back (worse)and have woken up this morning to a streaming cold. Nice.

The pharmicist has told me previously it is not advisable to take any cough mixture although I have smothered myself with Vicks vapourub which does ease things abit.

Take care

Oh no, we don't have any honey here! Will certainly give the Vicks Vaporub and hot ribena a bash though.

Sorry to hear you're ill too munchkinmum... It's no fun being ill this time of year. I'm snuggled in PJ's on the sofa watching the Grinch in a bid to cheer myself up! Hope you feel better soon too.

If you can get some honey, try taking a spoonful with a bit of black pepper sprinkled on top - really helped when I had a hacking cough.

Hi

I managed to see my dr on 24th, i had extremely raw sore throat, choking violent cough, stuffed nose, aches pains, chills...
and 38 weeks preg!!

anyway dr said no cough mixures/medicines and absolutely no ibupofen.

just paracetamol (upto normal dosage in one day), rest and plenty of healthy vitamin rich food.

i basically took that advise, and its taken 2 days, but i actually managed to get out of bed and do a little light house work today.

(x-mas was spent knocked out in bed)

i also second the vicks vapur rub, keeping warm, honey, and throat sweets (with no medicine in them) to stop your throat going dry.

HTH and hope you feel better soon,

Non-medicinal glycerin based linctus is also good (that's what the Boots pharmacist suggested when I asked) - I got a very nice honey and lemon one - there are no drugs etc in it, but it does help soothe the throat. She also said to avoid throat sweets with anaesthetic in them, but that others are ok.
