son is 10 days old & at night sleeps for a 5 hour stretch or so in one go. he feeds well outside of this & is gaining weight, midwife says we are just lucky but i am concerned if there is a problem with him sleeping too well - getting enough food etc, always you hear about babies sleeping only 1.5-2 hours at a time!

Be careful what you wish for!
They will likely change sleeping patterns many times in the first few months so I wouldn't expect then to keep to those hours

If he is more than 7lbs and was born full term and is gaining weight, let it go. It is very likely that at about 3 weeks, he will wake up some more and turn into a night owl

It’s fine if weight gain is on track. Tbf it’s not uncommon for brand new newborns to initially be very sleepy but then they wake up! Enjoy it and long may it last.

My children all did this. Don't worry Flowers

Enjoy it! My daughter did this from 3 weeks old until 4 months. It was amazing. I worried a bit at first but if they're in the same room as you and are gaining weight it's absolutely fine.

One of mine slept great, 5/6 hours stretches at night most of the time for the first six months.

He was also a cracking daytime sleeper.

He was big (10lber at birth) and grew on track. So I bed no worries about the only one feed in the night business.

It was a lovely Mat leave!

After 6 months it was much patchier. And he’s now three and still isn’t so reliable.

If they’re gaining weight, enjoy it while it lasts!

(IMHO more new borns could sleep like this with better advice. I was told to make my older one up for feeds but she was also a chunky baby gaining weight fine and looking back it was terrible advice that got us into over tiredness and poor sleep patterns really early that we didn’t get out of for ages).

DS1 did this, slept from 11pm-6am from 10 days old.
He was on the small side but Pediatrician said it was fine as he was gaining weight and nursing (and cluster feeding!) during the day.

Amichelle84 · 14/01/2022 17:28

Make the most of it, it won't always be like that.

OtiMama · 14/01/2022 18:20

If he is gaining weight you don't need to worry. My son went 3-4 hours from the start and never any less than that. Enjoy the sleep you are getting.

Fleur405 · 14/01/2022 18:20

As long as he is gaining weight then sounds like he’s doing great.

Somerandomgirl · 16/01/2022 22:06

Mine was like that.. but i had to stay 10 days in hospital / emergency c section... so midwifes made us wake up middle of the night to feed and soon got him in pattern to wake up...no idea if that was good idea at all... but according to them thats whst u have to do

DS2 did this and by 6 weeks he was sleeping 12 hours straight (which lasted until about 22 weeks when he reverted to a normal baby).

I would have been like a new woman had my older child not been a disastrous sleeper. Though I was glad to have them that way round, DS1 was such an awful difficult baby that I was really able to enjoy DS2
