Massive bleed at 7 weeks but I'm still pregnant??!

I am 7 weeks pregnant. Very nervous as several previous miscarriages. But felt positive because blood tests looked good and had ultrasound showing fetus is correct length and saw heartbeat. Then out of the blue I had very sharp abdominal stabbing pains and started bleeding bright red blood. I passed a thick tissue mass, about 5cm x 6cm. Then a lot more blood and started having painful cramping at intervals. I bled a lot for several hours with very bad pain. I was absolutely sure I had miscarried and when the doctor saw the tissue mass I had passed and how much blood she also told me she believed I had miscarried. I was surprised that there was no bleeding overnight. I had ultrasound this morning and was flabbergasted to see the fetus is still there and heartbeat still visible. I now haven't bled for 24 hours, but I have some stomach pain. I really don't know if I can hope that I will now continue with a healthy pregnancy or if I should prepare myself for the worst. Has anyone had a pregnancy survive such an early huge bleed? I feel so scared and confused. No one could explain why I bled or what the tissue mass was (definitely was not pregnant with twins). Thanks for listening! Going crazy trying to remain calm and just wait it out.

Hi @AriBella, that must have been so hard on you, the anxiety of the over night wait and the worry! So glad to hear that your baby is safe and well

I had something similar happen last week, whilst I didn’t pass anything large, I did have bleeding and painful cramps. I too thought it was over for me but when I was scanned the next day they found a sac and heartbeat. They did find a second sac that has stopped progressing. While they couldn’t definitively say it was this, the likelihood is that the pain and bleeding was me losing the twin.

I still thought I’d lose the second and so prepared myself for the worst but yesterday as the follow up scan all was well and baby had grown.

I know it’s tough but please hold on to the hope as it can and does turn out ok xxx

Hi OP,

I had a huge bleed on Christmas Day just gone (of all days) at 11 weeks. No cramps at all or pain but I had a HUGE gush of blood come out with a massive clot (size of my palm) which I was sure was the baby but after that I didn't bleed anymore. I went to a&e who checked my cervix and said it was still closed but they couldn't confirm anything.

I spent 2 days until my scan adamant a baby could not still be there with how much blood came out. Amazingly when I got scanned there was a baby still there measuring perfect and jumping about! She checked everywhere and could see no reason at all for the bleed! She did say some people's cervix can get irritated by an anything like sex etc and the blood just pools out after a certain amount of time in one go so don't give up hope yet :)

I've had this twice. Different outcomes each time. Miscarriage I restarted bleeding and 2 days later it suddenly became very heavy and I miscarried in the toilet minutes before scan in the hospital toilet. I was about 12 weeks.

The next pregnancy I had a big bleed at 7 weeks and it stopped and no more problems and dd is now 3. Was very surprised to see a baby and heartbreat on the scan.
