Can sleep deprivation give you dizzy spells?

I'm 7.5 months gone, I know it could be low iron or something else, but can sleep deprivation (all the holiday excitement and doings) be the main cause of dizzy spells in a pg woman? I only get the dizzy spells when I walk up or down stairs, but it's pretty bad when it comes.

I'm pretty severely sleep deprived at the moment and am getting lightheaded. That said, it could be other things, low bp for example. Have you seen a GP or MW recently?

How's your blood pressure usually?

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 25/12/2007 19:28

sleep deprivation
low iron
low blood pressure
weight of baby etc.

all sorts of things!

saw mw last week and everything was fine. I don't get blood-tested for iron, so i can't rule that out, mind. Thing is, if i go out for a walk or cycle ride i feel fine, so it's not simply exertion making me feel odd. I can run after an escaping toddler and my pelvic floor may suffer but I don't get dizzy from that. It's just climbing the stairs... oh, and standing around. But that's the same in every pregnancy, I can't stand for long. I end up sitting on the floor or at least squatting down. Does that sound like low blood pressure?
Maybe sleep deprivation can make blood pressure lower?

Oh, and I get pins and needles really quickly in my legs (like if I kneel for more than a few minutes). Is that consistent with low bp, too?

And is this an excuse for a Xmas tipple because I remember my friend's mum got prescribed a daily drink of spirits to raise her bp.

what does the dizziness feel like?? ie is it light headed ness, or a sensation of moving?

lljkk · 25/12/2007 19:48

Sense that I'm going to black out...

I think the pins and needles separate from the dizziness myself, but it does sound like the low bp I suffered from both times when pg. I was told to drink loads, caffeine helps (e.g. full fat coke, coffee) and keep moving if poss! Drinking loads did help, caffeine good if I was desperately dizzy. I personally never see the point in the iron testing as even if you are diagnosed with it the tablets they prescribe are awful. If you're borderline they won't prescribe, so personally I took Spatone (iron-rich water) which has no ill effects and made me feel fab!

I felt like this last time but I had comedy low iron stores and low blood pressure

Your sinuses aren't blocked are they? Can affect inner ear and then you get dizzy, happens to me all the time!

whomovedmychocolate · 25/12/2007 22:11

Don't suppose this happens just after you get up does it - that's a really common sign of blood pressure dropping. Or it could be swinging blood sugar - do you eat complex carbs regularly, banana sandwiches on wholemeal are great in late pregnancy I found.

whomovedmychocolate · 25/12/2007 22:12

Ah I see its stairs - well your body is working v hard - perhaps it is telling you to slow down a bit?

lljkk · 26/12/2007 06:51

maybe, I barely did anything yesterday, though. I am struggling to eat, though, just not interested. Then I forgot to ring my parents I was so caught up with feeling funny. Woke up with a headcold and feeling famished at 5am this morning, now okay post sarnie and paracetomol. So could have been sinuses brewing yesterday, too.
But another day of sleep deprivation, I fear! Being pregnant is so weird(!)
