Antihistamines (Ceterizine) during pregnancy

Hi,

Im around 10 weeks pregnant and suffer from a severe dust mite allergy. When I first found out I was pregnant I came off my antihistamines, but my symptoms returned very quickly and I was feeling very unwell. I checked the NHS website and it said Ceterizine was fine to take in pregnancy, so I started to take them again (I struggled to get in touch with my GP because they were rolling out covid vaccines but I did try a GP telephone service who said it seems to be fine), I have managed to now speak to my GP directly and she said she's unsure and needs to check with a specialist if it's OK. I'm concerned as I already took some.
I have obviously seen a few posts where others were prescribed them but I'm now feeling anxious as every time I ask someone I get a different answer!

Has anyone been advised to take them or taken them throughout their pregnancy.

both cetirizine and loratadine are considered safe during pregnancy.

best is to avoid or reduce allergens though. replace natural fibre duvet/pillow with synthetic fibres, hoover regularly etc...

Pretty sure it's fine. If not loratadine is deff safe and I took it all through my pregnancy

Thank you, even before this we removed carpets and switched to hardwood floors, switched duvets and mattresses, my allergy is bad and you can't avoid dust it's literally everywhere even on our skin apparently :(

Allergy sufferer here too! I spoke to GP and they said Clarityn is safe (even though it says it’s not on the box but that’s due to them not actively testing it on pregnant people) but she did also prescribe me loratadine (which is what is in clarityn) too just so I had some. I’ve been taking both and did in my last pregnancy too :)

When you say both, do you mean you have been taking ceterizine and loratodine?

My doctor said that Loratadine is preferable in pregnancy if you need to take an antihistamine x

I took it throughout.

My allergies can trigger asthma and also make my job difficult. Doctor said being able to breath was the important thing!

I took both in pregnancy - sensible doctor said risk to me for not taking was the higher one. I do think, as someone said above, that loratadine may be preferable moving forwards.

I take loratadine daily, including during both my pregnancies. I was also prescribed pirtiton.

My GP and midwife have both said Piriton is safe. You can get the tablet version over the counter.

I couldn't find much info on loratadine or ceterizine. I used to take two ceterizine a day and loratadine never used to do much good for my allergies..

One Piriton a day seems to be doing the trick for now..

I take clarityn and loratadine, depends on what I have on me when I need to take it :)

I take daily antihistamines, was advised to stop during first trimester. Given ceterizine after that and then back to my usual when it didn't work.

In case anyone was wondering.

Doctor called back and said both Ceterizine and loratodine were the recommendations if medication was needed. Therefore I have now continued with Ceterizine to help my allergies. I feel so much better, but they aren't as effective as they used to be.
