I’ve just been called by a midwife asking me to come in today to discuss my bloods.
They told me I wouldn’t hear from them unless there was a problem, so clearly something is wrong.
Does anyone have any experience with this? I’m assuming the worst, but want to at least be prepared as to what they could tell me. I’m not even sure what all the tests were for.

I’m 14 weeks.

Could be something as simple as low iron, or they had an inconclusive test.

annlee3817 · 10/01/2022 10:28

Could be low iron, negative blood type, a vitamin deficiency

Ahhhhhbisto · 10/01/2022 10:53

I got called in as my bloods showed i wasn't rubella immune.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 10/01/2022 10:55

You're probably deficient in something. Or like a pp said, missing a vaccination.

rose88xx · 10/01/2022 11:08

Thank you so much for your responses. I didn’t expect to be called in urgently for something like a vaccine or low iron, but at least I can have some hope now to get me through the day until my appointment!

If you are 14 weeks it could be something from the combined screening that they do around about the time of the 12 week scan (it can be called the NIPT or NIPS) ? As you want to be prepared it could be worth reading up on anything they gave you at the time or the NHS website just so you are prepared.

Whatever it is though, the good thing is that they have called you in to talk about it and that is much better than it falling through the cracks and being missed! Really hope all is well and like others said it could be as simple as needing to go on iron tablets.

rose88xx · 10/01/2022 11:18

Yes growbabygrow, I was a bit late having my 12 week scan and bloods because of covid staff shortages. So these results will be from those I had last week. At the time I was told the time the NF measurement was normal, but I know they then combine that with blood test results.

I will try to do some reading, as I do want to be prepared for what they could tell me. Thanks a lot. X

I had bloods done at my first appointment with the gyn at 8 weeks, they called me back in because my IgG test for cytomegalovirus was positive, meaning either I had it in the past or have it now/recently, and they had to do a second, different IgM test to rule out a current infection. Waiting on the results

I am in Germany though so I don't know what is screened for as standard in the UK

DoctorBambino · 10/01/2022 11:48

@rose88xx just in case it is from your 12 week blood screening and you have come back as high risk, try not to worry too much. I was given a 1in5 risk of downs and 1in89 of the other two because of my blood work (extremely low papp a) but the nipt test showed all was fine and I'm now 37 weeks with a well growing baby boy.

Best of luck today.

GrowBabyGrow · 11/01/2022 18:08

I hope all went well yesterday @rose88xx Flowers

rose88xx · 11/01/2022 18:33

Hi @GrowBabyGrow

Thanks for checking in. We were told the baby has a high risk of Down's syndrome (1:100) and so we did the more advanced NIPT blood test yesterday. Now just the dreaded 2 week wait for the results and will decide from there what to do next.

I felt very prepared by the time I got there and it wasn't a surprise, although obviously still very upsetting.

Thanks again, it was so helpful to have your responses yesterday x

Hi @rose88xx, on my last baby my scan went fine but bloods gave me 1:100 risk of DS as my Papp-A was low . NIPT was fine . I think the low Papp-a has happened to a lot of people and nothing ever seems to come of it . Just remember there is 99% chance of nothing being wrong !

rose88xx · 11/01/2022 20:15

Thank you @SaraKitty! We are trying to stay positive. They didn’t give much of an explanation at the time but from reading similar posts on here it seems that the main problem with my bloods is high HCG.

I have PCOS and was taking medication for ovulation induction to get pregnant and have read that can mess with the values a bit! Will just keep everything crossed until we get our results.

Didn't want to read and run. My Downs risk was 1:54. After an invasive diagnostic test results were all clear xx

GrowBabyGrow · 11/01/2022 21:50

Hope the next results come back quickly and are more positive! Glad you felt prepared going in there at least but it must still have been very difficult. Hope you are can do something nice as self care after a hard start to the week x

annlee3817 · 12/01/2022 02:50

Hope the results come back quickly

Derbee · 12/01/2022 13:03

Just remember, 1:100 is “high risk” but is still only 0.01% chance

SouthwestSis · 12/01/2022 13:35

1 in 100 is a 1% chance, not a 0.01% chance....

But still much more likely that there is not a trisomy than that there is!
Crossing my fingers for you OP

Derbee · 12/01/2022 14:19

@SouthwestSis yes, of course. Meant as a decimal! Sorry, OP

Tempusfudgeit · 12/01/2022 14:43

Hi OP my last pregnancy came back high risk. The midwife said my age alone (43) would have made the results come back as that. I had the Harmony test and got the results back a lot sooner than two weeks. I'm sure all will be well with you. Are you finding out the sex too?

Holskey · 12/01/2022 15:53

Good luck with your results @rose88xx. You could definitely have worse odds than 1:100, and as the actual measurememt wasn't itself a concern, there are certainly reasons to be hopeful.

rose88xx · 14/01/2022 11:28

Hi @Tempusfudgeit thanks so much for your message, I’m reassured to hear it didn’t take 2 weeks! I’m really hoping we get the results next week.

I hadn’t planned to find out the sex, but after this my mind has changed for some reason! I have an overwhelming desire know to know as much as possible about the baby, I think to reassure me that all is well. Still not 100% decided though! Did you find out? X

Hi Rose, we did. We thought - why not, if the information is available. It also halved the name options! Keeping everything crossed for you Smile

rose88xx · 25/01/2022 12:03

Hi everyone,

Just an update for anyone following. Thanks again for all your responses they were so helpful.

Today was just over 2 weeks since we did the test so I called the screening department in my hospital to ask if they knew anything. The midwife told me she tried to call a week ago (no idea how I missed that I’ve been glued to my phone!) to tell me the result came back low risk. We are so relieved, I instantly started sobbing standing outside my office!

The last few weeks have been tough as I’m 16 weeks today so have felt a lot of growth recently and it was so hard to not get excited.

Thanks again to everyone. Xx
