I’m 3 days post elcs & still no milk - baby is latching but nurse gave formula last night as so hungry

They keep saying be patient for milk to come in but is it too late now? Breasts seem swollen but no other signs

Day 3.

Hang on in there, drink plenty of fluids and eat eat eat!!!!

UltraVividLament · 07/01/2022 13:44

Do you have a breast pump? Are you producing colostrum?

It was around day 2 that colostrum changed to milk for me, but that was with expressing frequently around also trying to latch baby, so not sure if that's typical.

JammyDodgersandPeas · 07/01/2022 13:47

Day 5 both times (one EMCS and one ELCS), and came in with force! I bf the younger one to 2.5, if that's any reassurance. Keep drinking water and lots of skin to skin and you'll get there.

sweatpantsofdefeat · 07/01/2022 13:51

Day 5 first time after EMCS and day 4 second time after ELCS.

Didn't give formula, just lots of suckling for colostrum. Although both babies lost >10% they gained it back with a vengeance once my milk came in!

MajorCarolDanvers · 07/01/2022 13:51

Day 5 for me after both sections. Keep going with latching - there will be colostrum and the more you latch the more it will get your hormones going.

MajorCarolDanvers · 07/01/2022 13:51

I'd really try and avoid giving formula btw

elvis4nuts · 07/01/2022 14:01

Oh yes lots of skin to skin!

Rrrob · 07/01/2022 14:07

Day 5 for me. Keep going!

GiltEdges · 07/01/2022 14:17

Day 5 for me. I went on to BF until DS was 18 months Smile

Littlebelina · 07/01/2022 14:22

All 3 times on day 5. For both ds and dd2 they both had at least one bottle of formula (after latching on for a bit) and both were breastfed exclusively after the first week until solids were introduced so don't sweat having given a bottle. Just persevere and you'll get there.

stiltonandcrackers · 07/01/2022 14:29

10 day for me. We had to supplement with formula while I rested and then it was all good!

Day 4 for me after CS with both. Used the teeny pre made bottles of formula a couple of times a day as well as lots of latching on. Once my milk came in I EBF.

Why? I supplemented with formula once a day until my milk came in on day 10. Once my milk came in no more formula and I breastfed with no problems until my dd was 15 months. No apparent nipple aversion, no laziness to take from the breast. Instead I did not have a starving baby, I got 5 hours sleep while my husband looked after baby and gave her the bottle. Without that rest my milk may never have come in.
Bonnealle · 07/01/2022 16:03

Two weeks!

Skullycup45 · 07/01/2022 16:06

I can't remember, but I was definitely home both times. So it would have been after 5 days with DC1 and four days with DC2.

Personally, I didn't BF either child. Mainly after negative experiences of midwives trying to extract milk from me after having DC1.

Posyrosy6 · 07/01/2022 18:02

Thank you so much !! This is so reassuring.. where do I find how much formula to give 3 day old baby? I feel totally out of my depth here ! They should be feeding every 3 hours or so?
Makes me feel reassured that others took time to come in as well

Advice on formula amounts by age/weight should be on every formula bottle/carton. If in doubt, give a small amount and offer frequently.

Daisysandviolets · 07/01/2022 18:19

Colostrum for 3-4 days and milk came in on day xxx

ThelastRolo20 · 07/01/2022 18:22

I just want to say I'm in the same boat and lots of you have reassured me! I'm on day 4 post section and milk is changing but no noticeable boob changes and weight loss was just over 10%. I'm sure we'll both be fine in the end, we just need to preserve

Pantsomime · 07/01/2022 18:27

Day 5 here, got taken back to hospital re birthweight drop and told to FF, which I did, but when milk came in , I reduced the formula and managed switch to 100% EBF which took about 3 days, no problems

pompomsgalore · 07/01/2022 18:30

Keep putting the baby on the boob at every opportunity. Milk WILL come. Be careful with the formula as it will reduce your supply. Also postpone any visitors and get in bed and do skin to skin whilst eating Chou and watching Netflix.

GoGoGretaDoll · 07/01/2022 18:32

Day 5, just when I was on the point of giving up! My own midwife that I'd been seeing all through pg came in (she'd been on holiday), stuck me in a chair topless with a blanket wrapped round me and baby on me and just sat with me talking quietly for three hours, god bless her beautiful heart. Took all the stress out of it and we were off.

Rest up as much as possible with as much skin to skin as you can manage. Keep your own fluids up and try to relax (i know 'try to relax' is the most useless advice ever!! But also true).

Alayalaya · 07/01/2022 18:37

How do you know there’s no milk? I was never able to express any milk by hand but the baby managed to suck enough milk to feed for two years!

Also I was inexperienced and I thought that I should try to feed the baby every three hours. Nope. You need to let the baby suck pretty much constantly to bring the milk in.

elvis4nuts · 07/01/2022 18:47

I agree with @Alayalaya

Baby on the breast as much as possibly. Get comfy, tele on, snacks & drinks.
Baby on breast! Even if she's asleep!
