I am 28 weeks pregnant and lately Iv been waking up lying on my back. firstly I wondered if anyone else knew if this was common and how to stop this as I know it's best for baby to lie on ur side. Secondly Iv been getting terrible reflux acid and waking up choking on it and I'm wondering what the best thing is for this or how can I try to avoid this happening? I have been taking rennies for heart burn but the scary thing is waking up thinking I'm choking. So I have two dillemas I am asking for some help with.

  1. Why do I keep waking up on my back, is this normal and how can I avoid this?
  2. Choking on reflux acid- can I avoid this happening? Is it common? How can I help it.

Sorry for the bombardment of information and questions but it's my first baby and I don't know what's what's and would rather not google and freak myself out!!

Thanks so much for any responses in advance x

Hi,
Sorry I can help with the reflux. With the sleeping, do you have a pregnancy pillow? I've got a big croissant shaped one and find having it between my legs stops me moving in my sleep.
You can only do what you can. Tommy's say something like 'don't worry if you wake up on your back just roll onto your side agak before going back to sleep.'

I am 34 weeks and have had issues with both of your problems. I sleep with a long pregnancy pillow between my legs and put another pillow behind me so if I roll, I'm not truly on my back and the pressure is off the inferior vena cava. I don't tend to move now.
The reflux is managed with omeprazole which is prescribed. If I forget to take it or run out then it's hell and have woken up choking on acid. Get omeprazole prescribed. I have taken it in both pregnancies and it's amazing. Lots of pregnant women take it.

I had awful reflux as well and the only way I ended up getting any sleep was propping myself up with enough pillows so that I was sleeping as upright as possible

Thank you all so much. I do have a pregnancy pillow but I haven't tried with a pillow behind my back that's a good idea which I'll try. Funnily enough Iv been prescribed omeprazole in the past but didn't know if it was safe to take in pregnancy so have been holding off taking it. I'll maybe phone the dr and get some prescribed. Thank you xx
