Thrush and bleeding

So I'm currently 31 weeks pregnant and this morning when I woke up and went for a morning wee I noticed a bit of blood on my panty liner which obviously made me go into manic mode and as I wiped I saw more blood and it was quite fresh too! My heart literally stopped and I ran to my phone to call the emergency line which my midwife gave me. They asked if I was still feeling baby move which I was and if I had any pains which I don't at all which is why this is such a shock. So she told me to put on a pad and wait another half hour and see if there's anymore blood and if there is to call back. So I'm currently waiting and thought I'd come on here and ask if anyone else had bleeding in the last trimester and everything was ok?? Another thing I should add is that she asked if I had sex within the last 24 hours which I hadn't BUT there is something. A few weeks ago I tried shaving down there and ever since then it's just been really itchy I'm talking REALLY itchy and I did mention this to my midwife when I saw her a few weeks ago and she done a urine sample and said it was fine and she just told me it's normal to be sensitive down there during pregnancy so I just ignored it even though it's been really itchy ever since but today the person who I spoke to said it's likely to be thrush which I need to get Canesten pessary for. She said this may have led to me bleeding but I don't understand how that would?? Has anyone had any experience or been through something similar please I am so anxious and scared right now I just need some advice and reassurance.

I'm 17 weeks and last week I had thrush and used a pessary which cleared it up. I had also had some bleeding and felt generally a bit minging in that area so mentioned it at midwife apt and she got me to do a swab. It came back as group b strep and thrush and since I've had the pessary I've not noticed any more blood. It was more like blood stained discharge than fresh blood though. Hope everything is OK. There are lots of reasons for bleeding during pregnancy and at least you're far enough along to have the reassurance of feeling baby move to help ease the anxiety somewhat.

I had fairly bad thrush at 24 weeks that wouldn't clear up and eventually I had some bleeding. It was a few specks of red blood when I wiped. Baby was still moving normally but like you I panicked and called the maternity hosp who told me to come in. They did a scan and doppler, baby was fine. They did an exam and could see that it was thrush which had caused irritation and bleeding. I was prescribed daily pessaries and thankfully it cleared up after a few days. It sounds like you've done the right thing calling them, hopefully it is just some irritation x

Just to add if u feel itchy again like that it is safe to put pessaries, get from gp or from any shop pharmacy .. dont wait cause sometimes gets better on its own sometimes then harder to get rid of and so uncomfortable, u dont have to be embarrassed, probably most of us who are pregnant have it x

I went in to be assessed at about 16 weeks because of some very light bleeding. Midwife said it was the thrush. I knew I had thrush (in fact I still have it 4 months later) but didn’t know it can cause bleeding.

Did you go in for a check over in the end? Hope everything's settled now and it is just the thrush.

Thank you all so much for your replies, this has made me feel tonnes better as I've been so anxious throughout this whole pregnancy so you can imagine how I felt when this happened to me this morning. So the update is I waited half an hour like they told me to see if there was any further bleeding on the new pantyliner I put on, the wait was absolutely torture as I was just praying there wasn't gonna be anymore bleeding. So I waited about 40 minutes to be sure and when I checked thankfully it was completely clear but when I tried to wipe there were traces of blood still but not a lot. So I called them back anyway and how can I put this.. she was very blazé and abrupt but don't get me wrong she was very reassuring but it's almost like she just wanted to get off the phone. She was like sounds absolutely fine, your don't have cramps and you can still feel baby move so you have nothing to worry about, it's very common, we get hundreds of these types of calls and it's absolutely normal. She then said just keep the pad on and if there's further bleeding like heavy bleeding then call back but it very much sounds like thrush so just go to the shop and get canesten pessery and it should clear up and she also mentioned that thrush can sometimes cause bleeding because of the irritation to the cervix because I'm itching it sooo much 😞 I even asked her if she was 100% sure that I didn't have to worry as I was very anxious she said if she was worried she would have told me to come in but she is that certain that it's ok. So yeah I went to Boots and basically was told they couldn't sell it to me as I'm pregnant which I explained the midwife told me to get it and it's completely safe but they was like how they would get in trouble for selling it to me as it states on the leaflet that they aren't allowed to without a prescription. I see my midwife on Wednesday anyway so I'll get it then. So sorry for the long post it's just that I've been so scared this whole pregnancy with something going wrong ☹️

I had some light bleeding with thrush too, it soon went away once I treated the infection.

Purchasing the pessary was a nightmare! I ended up sending my DH to Boots to buy it for me as getting an appointment with a GP was like seeing a unicorn and my midwife just told me to go buy one.

Fleur405 · 04/01/2022 22:04

Ask your gp for a prescription - I’ve had 4 prescriptions and it’s the same stuff you can but in boots. Now instead of waiting a week for a prescription I just get me OH to go to the chemist for me. My consultant just obstetrician said it’s safe to use in pregnancy (I asked because I just can’t get the damn thrush to go away!)

Sorry for all the typos but I’m sure you get the gist!

@timewilltel any update on this?

I'm having the same issue. I can't tell if blood if from irritation or something more to be worried about?

This was 2 years ago now so yes I definitely have an update lol it ended up being thrush and I got given a pessary which cleared it up within a day! Looking at your pic I can tell you that mine was A LOT worse! I'm talking literally fresh red blood and a lot of it! So I wouldn't be too concerned but you should always speak to your midwife to reassure you and be on the safe side. Do you have any other symptoms too?
