Am I having an ectopic pregnancy?

Hi all,

I am currently laying in bed typing with my left hand because I have a horrible shoulder/neck ache on my right side. I am concerned my pregnancy is ectopic and feel lost because the EPU scheduled my scan for this Tuesday last Friday.
I am 8 weeks pregnant according to dates and Last week I started bleeding light pink blood mostly when I wiped, on Friday my bleeding increased to the point I was changing my pad every hour. During this time I thought to do a digital pregnancy test just to see if my dates were accurate and it said 1-2 weeks pregnant which was both impossible and odd as I missed my period 4 weeks ago.

Come Saturday the pain in my abdomen was too much, I also had an odd pain/ache in my shoulder to neck and my arm/hand felt odd, my pain had also localised itself to my lower right abdomen and radiating down my leg. My partner made me go to A&E as I felt lightheaded from the pain a similar lightheadedness to getting your knee tattooed, and painkillers were doing nothing. I went to hospital by which time I was passing some large clots, some the size of golf balls and some much larger. I assumed at this point I had just miscarried and passed the pregnancy as the clots were bigger than I’ve ever seen and I’ve had a previous miscarriage at 7 weeks. In A&E they took bloods and urine and I was given a speculum and told by the gynae doctor that my cervix was closed so it was near impossible for me to be miscarrying and I would probably go onto have a normal pregnancy. I was sent home and told to come in for a scan when the scanning facilities open this Tuesday.

my bleeding is less now and I am not changing my pad every hour, the blood is darker now like the colour of prune juice. The pain is less as long as I am sitting or laying down but it’s still there. I have an odd feeling below my diaphragm on my right side also, hard to explain almost like a pressure or fullness. I also keep getting sharp shooting pains in my bum similar to ones I have on my period. My shoulder/neck irritation is more like a dull ache and almost a tingly feeling in the rest of my arm and it’s worse when laying down doesn’t matter what side I lay on.

I am now concerned that I have an ectopic and it has ruptured but don’t want to go back to the hospital for them to send me home and tell me to come back on Tuesday when they have facilities to scan me. I’m really paranoid as my partner is back to work tomorrow and so concerned something will happen whilst I am home with the kids. I’m wondering whether anyone else had any symptoms like this and whether it was ectopic? I first thought ectopic pains are constant but have now been told that they can come and go so I’ve just got myself in an anxious mess. Would love to hear any similar experiences.

Sorry fir such a long post.

Hey I'm no medic but what you're describing really doesn't sound good at all.

Phone 111 and see what they say.

I've had an ectopic which was diagnosed before it ruptured and my pain was similar to yours. My friend's did rupture and she passed
out with the pain and blood loss and woke up in Intensive care.

Ring 111 ASAP.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 03/01/2022 02:34

You need to get checked out as quickly as possible. The pain most definitely can come and go. Mine was excruciating but went away after a couple of hours, only to return two days later. I even fainted, but again the pain subsided. I went to the EPU next day as, although the pain was gone, I didn't feel right. I was admitted as an emergency as my Fallopian tube had ruptured. The surgeon told me that most people who reach this stage are rushed in via A&E.

I don't mean to alarm you, but please do something now. Don't leave it. Not with those symptoms.

madeinthe80z · 03/01/2022 03:22

Sorry you are going through this. I had an ectopic last month.

Closed cervix, bleeding, pain and your test showing 1-2 weeks is concerning.

I got told by the hospital that if it was rupturing, I would KNOW. However I've heard other stories (as above) which say otherwise.

I'd ring 111, or your EPU first thing. They could do a blood test for you even if the scan department isn't open tomorrow. Did they give you a number to ring if you had any problems before your scan? I was given a direct dial to the gynae ward and could call 24/7.

Hi @motochick I'm sorry you are going through this. I know what it's like to lie awake and not know what to do, my situation wasn't like yours but I feel for you Flowers
Out of interest, is this other thread also yours?

If you're worried enough to post again then you should take action. There must be scanning facilities somewhere, how on earth are emergencies diagnosed on weekends and bank hols?

I hope you find answers :-*

bcc89 · 03/01/2022 06:56

Have you called the EPU again? I would ring them and explain. I'm so sorry x

passionfruitpizza · 03/01/2022 07:10

I've had an ectopic I would absolutely call EPAU or go to A&E. if it is an ectopic it's better if they catch early.

loulou2021 · 03/01/2022 08:29

Sorry you're going through this OP. Like the others have said, I think you definitely need to go back to EPU. I had a similar situation in April last year. I started bleeding and was in a bit of pain (but not agony) and I assumed I was having a miscarriage. It turns out my right tube had ruptured. My EPU originally led me to believe I would be in much more pain if I was having a ruptured ectopic but when I described the pressure in my bum (that you've mentioned) they started to think something wasn't right. The pain definitely came and went. They kept me in overnight and when they scanned me they were shocked to see that I had ruptured and was bleeding heavily internally. I was rushed to surgery and all was ok in the end. It's a very serious situation and I don't want to alarm you but you need to be seen ASAP.

Thank you so much for all your comments with your experiences. I am going up to A&E now at a different hospital that provides scanning on bank holidays.

Hi @Kaw10 yes that was me but I somehow got logged out and couldn’t log back into my account again so made a new account. I know it’s absolutely ridiculous I’m taking myself to a different hospital now and I called in advance and they have scanning facilities on bank holiday as long as referred by A&E. fingers crossed everything gets sorted as all these pains are unbearable.

@motochick Glad you're going to A&E. It's the best thing. Hope you're ok. If it is an ectopic, there's loads of support on The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust website. I don't know how I'd have coped without them.

Thanks
loulou2021 · 04/01/2022 09:30

Hope you're doing ok OP!

Rrrob · 04/01/2022 09:40

How did you get on at the hospital? Hope you are ok.

Hannabanana2021 · 06/01/2022 18:37

I've just been through similar. Was on a drip in hospital for the pain. No rupture but diagnosed ectopic. Had first round of methotrexate yesterday with levels of 3651 😢 I hope you're ok x

madeinthe80z · 08/01/2022 08:39

@hannahbanana2021 sorry you're going through this. Hopefully the methotrexate works for you. I know how horrible it is as ots working and you don't know how well! so if you have any questions or need any support, pop back in and I will try and help where I can (only have my experience though!) X

Hannabanana2021 · 08/01/2022 08:48

@madeinthe80z thank you
I was in a lot of pain yesterday with cramping and on the side of Ectopic. Today the bleeding has ramped up. I just want it all over. I have my first blood test today after the medication ☹️ I dread going back to EPAU which is on the labour ward and seeing all those pregnant ladies 😭

I'm sorry you had to go through this too 😭 I was wondering if you've managed to conceive again since? I'm now worried I should've had the surgery incase the tube was damaged and the only way I'll find out now is if I go through it again 😔

madeinthe80z · 08/01/2022 22:36

@Hannahbanana2021 aw that sucks its on the labour ward! Mine is with gaenacology so not as bad as that. I think I went about 10 or 11 times all in all with all the scans and blood tests and check ups. I am only 7 weeks post methotrexate so can't really comment on conceiving again as we are currently in the 3 month wait. I feel totally ready though and have a consultant appointment on Monday so was going to ask! I'm not sure we ever confirmed mine was actually in one of my tubes, it was never officially found on my scans, my levels were close to 3000 too but I try not to think about it too much. At the time, I half wanted the surgery just so it was over with and I wasn't scared that every pain was a rupture! But my levels were down to 10 in 2 weeks which was great. Bleeding stopped and I ovulated as normal about 2 weeks later and had a normal period so that's a good sign fertility wise I think. How are you feeling today?

grace1991 · 08/01/2022 22:58

How are you? X
