Does morning sickness cause weight loss?

I am 14+2 and have lost about 10kg's since I found out I was pregnant.

I have been sick a lot, started off every evening and has now progressed to every morning and sometimes evenings at well.

I have tried all the usual suggestions - lemon/ginger tea, eating little and often, eating before getting up..... but nothing is working. I have talked to my GP about it but due to other medication I cannot take any anti sickness tablets.

I was slightly overweight when I became pregnant but am worried that baby is not getting the nutrients it needs coz nothing stays down and once I have been sick I cannot eat for another couple of hours coz I feel drained and the smell of food makes me feel nauseous as well.

Is this OK/Normal?

I lost 6kgs in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, due to severe morning sickness. Like you, nothing helped. My baby was born a very healthy 3.5kg, despite me having morning sickness nearly the whole time, although it did improve as the pregnancy went on.

LOL

i was never sick just felt sick the whole time so ate very little(oh the memories)

i did have accupunture to help with the sickness....

have you tried the ginger etc

yep, i wasn't sick, just felt it. the only thing i could keep down was flat coke, jaffa cakes and corned beef sandwiches on white bread with butter. it's a wonder dd is as healthy as she is.

chocolatespiders · 21/12/2007 13:51

i was sick constantly for first 20 wks - about 6/7 times per day. i was told not to worry about the baby. they will not suffer - they take a;l the nutrients they need out of yr body's stores - you might be a bit run down though.

Megan was 7lb 9oz at birth and is a thriving 6 week old now.

try not to worry too much. congrats on yr pg and sorry yr feeling so ill.

I too lost weight due to morning sickness but never fear, you gain it a plus alot more later on in the pregnancy. Just be sure you are eating something in those short moments when you can and try to make it count, something good for you rather than empty calories. Good Luck, it wil get better.

Yes, it's the one upside to morning sickness! I lost 2stone of excess weight by 16wks with my eldest, totally bloomed in the 2nd trimester and felt fit and full of energy in the 3rd. Came out of hospital slimmer than I'd been in years and baby was totally fine.
As pp says, baby doesn't suffer - all your food goes to the baby while your body starts eating itself alive! So just keep eating, it will help the nausea too.

Oh the psots are right- in the main its fairly normal if miserable. Hoever if you start struggling to keep fluids down, your breath smells of almonds and you get dehydrated you may be one of the small amount of people who needs rehydration. Unlikely but keep an eye.

cupcake78 · 21/12/2007 18:27

I lost 2.5 stone during my last pregancy due to morning sickness.

Midwives really were not that bothered as I was overweight.

11 weeks after having baby and proud to say I am less now than what I was when I got pregnant. Don't worry about it unless you loose alot of weight suddenly and try to take a vit suppliment.

cupcake78 · 21/12/2007 18:28

Oh yes my so called small son was born at 9lbs 5oz.

Didn't do him any harm at all.

Thanks all, feel a lot happier now - Have tried to contact the midwife (who I never met btw) but she only works Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the GP and don't know how else to contact her!!

Have a good christmas everyone and lets hope that I can at least have a small piece of turkey
