Covid test before c-section

Me and my husband have an appointment at the hospital tomorrow for Covid swabs before my c section on Thursday.
Does anyone know if this is a PCR or a lateral flow? Doesn’t really make much difference, I’m just curious …

I think there's another test they do I hospitals, along the same lines as PCR but done on-site

Anythingbutsnow · 26/12/2021 14:26

So what happens if your positive? Do they refuse your section?

user15364596354862 · 26/12/2021 14:27

Usually PCR for surgery patients.

ImStayingInside · 26/12/2021 14:31

@Anythingbutsnow, no I can still have the section as planned, but I will be isolated in the hospital and required to wear full PPE, staff will have to be in full PPE when with me and I can’t have anyone as a birth partner.
It is causing me a lot of stress! Just hoping we both test negative.

I went this morning for my pre-section test. It was a PCR test done via a drive through test centre. Apparently I will only hear the result if it's positive.

ImStayingInside · 26/12/2021 14:51

@PeaceLily2000 ours is drive through too.
How stressful 😬 I get that no news is good news, but I would much rather know either way!

Yes mine was a PCR too but I asked if my partner was to be tested and they said no. All the hospital guidance said they had to show lateral flows etc but when I asked when he showed his lateral flow results they said he’d be better off not doing one in case it came back with a false positive then he missed the birth 🙈 I was more relaxed when I knew I’d still get the section regardless but would have hated him not to be there. The staff were so lovely when we were in there though that during the actual section I don’t think I spoke to him or looked round at him at all 😂 Felt kind of bad after it but I was just so focused on seeing the baby as soon as he was born!

sarah13xx · 26/12/2021 17:26

I was supposed to be the last section of the day but a girls result (she was infront of me) hadn’t came back in time so they told me they’d be coming for me next. Obviously I wasn’t expecting this so I was on edge every time someone walked past the curtain waiting on them saying it was time 😬. A few hours past and eventually someone put their head in and said they’d just taken the other girl because her result came in last minute 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 So I calmed down for another hour again!

mariebaby3 · 26/12/2021 17:28

I did lateral flows before going in and they did a PCR when on the ward

ImStayingInside · 26/12/2021 17:49

They are definitely testing us both, as I had to give his details and DOB. I get why they’re doing it, but it is definitely adding another element of stress!

I had a PCR at the hospital when I had my booking bloods done. Dh didn't have to do any tests, just had to wear a hospital issued mask.

Chely · 26/12/2021 19:16

Oh and I went in to labour the day before my elcs booking, that wasn't much fun as I had to wait over 7 hours to go to surgery. Was so nice for the pain to stop when the spinal went in.

Arecklessmanor · 26/12/2021 19:22

I'm having ELCS in the next few weeks and will have a PCR test at my pre op appointment a few days before the surgery.
They will still do the surgery if it is positive but as a PP says staff would need to be in more PPE etc.

DH has been to most hospital appointments with me and has to show proof of a negative lateral flow test every time.

Good luck for Thursday OP.

ImStayingInside · 27/12/2021 22:36

@Arecklessmanor thank you!

So we had our tests this morning at a little drive through tent. A nurse did the tests on us, which wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.
I asked her if we would get the results and she said possibly by this afternoon, but we haven’t heard yet.
I am going to ring the hospital tomorrow and see if they have an update or when/if we can expect our results. I’m aware that if the tests are processed in the hospital they might have had less staff today with it being the bank holiday.
Although we have been very careful, I am still quite nervous about getting the results back as the rates are so high at the minute and so many people seem to be testing positive, even without symptoms.
So just hoping for 2 negatives so DH can be at the birth.

Just keeping this updated! I rang the hospital and they said that the test results are sent via text between 24-48 hours after the test.
So I potentially still have to wait until tomorrow morning 😰
We are well, with no symptoms, but I am still so worried that one of us is asymptomatic and it will mean that I will have to be alone on Thursday.

Fingers crossed for two negative results for you @ImStayingInside and a lovely calm experience on Thursday.
If you feel able to update at some point please do but you may just be enjoying your last few days just the two of you and then spending time with your newborn.

ImStayingInside · 28/12/2021 12:32

@Arecklessmanor are you psychic? 😂

Happened to check my Covid records on the NHS app and my negative PCR result is there from yesterday, as is my husband’s on his.
I am so relieved!
Waiting on a phone call tomorrow now to let me know if I will be on the morning or afternoon list on Thursday.
